Default OpenSolaris Alive and Well at Oracle

From http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/osr...-at-Oracle.htm

Quote:
"Oracle will continue to make OpenSolaris available as open source, and Oracle will continue to actively support and participate in the community," Dan Roberts, director of Solaris product management at Oracle, said during an OpenSolaris IRC (define) meeting on Friday. "Oracle is investing more in Solaris than Sun did prior to the acquisition, and will continue to contribute technologies to OpenSolaris, as Oracle already does for many other open source projects."

Realisticly speaking, killing of Solaris in favour of RedHat Linux would be one of the dumbest idea in the history of the industry. Oracle has already spend 8 billion dollars in cash for SUN.
For what? For NetBeans and to try to kill off MySQL?

Of course they have to support Linux because that is what their customers want them to do but Solaris is in house product and should be always strongly favored to the other vendor OS.
I would go as far as to say that the same applies for Sparc.

I have not seen IBM trying to get rid of PowerPC and AIX even thought they support i386 crap and Linux.

Oracle is now equal to IBM and they have to think big.

Totally agree with you, Oko..

It's ironic how the industry is evolving (again) into vertically integrated solutions (from hardware, OS, and all the way up to in-house applications). It looks like a great backward voyage to the 1960-70's, with companies like IBM, UNIVAC, Control Data Corporation, General Electric, RCA, Honeywell.. and even DEC (i.e., the DEC from the '70s-'80s).

(Open)Solaris is very different from both Linux and BSD, it has different uses and therefore different users (Although there is some overlapping of course), this is why it makes sense to keep supporting it.
The same applies to MySQL and Oracle DB.

If they don't keep Solaris alive, at least as a commercial product, what sense would there have been in buying up Sun? It's not like Sun Microsystems role in Java is the best acquisition you could ever make these days...
