Default Dennis Ritchie, creator of C and more, has died

Quote:
Dennis Ritchie, best known as the creator of the C programming language and co-creator of the UNIX operating system, has died at the age of 70 after a long, unspecified, illness. News of his death came from past collaborator, Rob Pike, in a message on Google+ which read: "I trust there are people here who will appreciate the reach of his contributions and mourn his passing appropriately. He was a quiet and mostly private man, but he was also my friend, colleague, and collaborator, and the world has lost a truly great mind."
Just a few days ago I read parts "The C Programming Language" because I needed to do some C programming after many years of successfully avoiding it.

Dennis Ritchie was one of the few people that I "Looked up to" in the computing world, guess now I get to literally look upwards. Learning of his passing this morning made me honestly sad but I'm thankful he's free of any human suffering.

R.I.P.

P.S. I hope it's not disrespectful to wonder how often he got compiler errors.

An older article in the Economist about the importance of Ritchie : Unix's founding fathers

That is sad news. I'm thankful to have had the chance to gain at least a small sliver of appreciation of what he did.

Steve Jobs death was a 'big thing' until Dennis Ritchie died, RIP.

Linux is not UNIX! Face it! It is not an insult. It is fact: GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not UNIX”.

agree, although their contributions are very different. As I told someone, this is like the guy who invented sliced bread, or butter passing; depending on how much you like assembly over it's precursor.
