Don't fall for it. It's a trap and you'll never get to keep it when it expires except for a steep price.

You just transfer the domain after you've registered?

As I said, there is no catch, and yes, you can always transfer the domain after you register

...it appears to require Australian residency, what's the deal?

Are there legal issues if you provide false information?

To accquire an australian domain (com.au, net.au, id.au...), it isnt easy, you need an ABN, RBN (business number). However, for .com, .org domain, the requirement is not that strict, no business number and it should be no problem if you make up your personal info for privacy purpose

2 year free .au domain (the .au domain generally much more costly than .com, .org)

It's a common trick by scammers to get you to sign up for a domain name but, if you try and transfer it, you find out you don't really own the name. Be sure to read the fine print. Othertimes, if time expires before you register, they won't renew it but through them or a hefty price. Or they drag out the renewal until it does expire. GoDaddy has pulled some of this stuff in the past. ICANN turned a deaf ear until just recently due to a couple hefty lawsuits.

Nothing is ever free without a catch.

I own 19 GoDaddy domains and I have never had a problem. I have never seen them advertise "free" domains either.
