Default Digital sound output

Hello

I'm trying to get my sound output working in FreeBSD 7.0 using the coaxial connector on my motherboard.

dmesg gives me the following output about the soundcard:
pcm0: <Intel 82801H High Definition Audio Controller> mem 0xf8100000-0xf8103fff irq 22 at device 27.0 on pci0
pcm0: [ITHREAD]
pcm0: <HDA Codec: Realtek ALC888>
pcm0: <HDA Driver Revision: 20071129_0050

I have loaded the snd_hda module.

/dev/sndstat:
FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm: 32bit 2007061600/i386)
Installed devices:
pcm0: <Intel 82801H High Definition Audio Controller> at memory 0xf8100000 irq 22 kld snd_hda [20071129_0050] [MPSAFE] (1p:2v/1r:1v channels duplex default)

The problem is that I don't really know how to access the digital sound output on the soundcard.

No my problem was that I could not find any digital output device in FreeBSD. Anyway solved it somewhat now using OSS. But the sound quality is really low suggestening that OSS messes up the audio stream in some way. I just want it to output a bit-perfect pcm signal, without resampling or whatever.

You could rebuild snd_hda.ko LKM using hda sources from current. In FreeBSD 8.0 aka FreeBSD CURRENT is newer version of hda which is IMHO better (from my own experience).

That is explained in handbook.
