Default Xorg very slow with GM965

Xorg with the intel(4) driver is *very* slow. For example it can take up to ~2 seconds for a page in Opera to refresh. But things like Xterm or switching workspaces in my WM are also slow.
This is on my ThinkPad T61 with a GM965.

(In private message) BSDFan666 suggested to tweak settings, I looked at the intel(4) and xorg.conf(5) man pages and they list several dozen options which could be tweaked, but my general experience with ``tweaking'' is that unless you have a very good idea of what you are doing and why it usually provides little to no effect or even makes the system slower...

I've updated my system to OPENBSD_4_6 today with no effect, the same problem was also in OpenBSD 4.5. I know compiling your own stuff isn't the recommended or even supported way of doing things in OpenBSD, but as far as I could see it was the easiest way to upgrade to 4.6 from my 4.6 snapshot install ...

Using the vesa(4) driver gave me about the same performance ...

...upgrade to 4.6 from my 4.6 snapshot install ...
That's a downgrade. -current is already a long way past 4.6.

The only supported way to get to 4.6-release is on October 1 or later, and by binary install or by binary upgrade from 4.5.

This was a recent thread specific to xterm performance:
http://marc.info/?t=124470600100004&r=1&w=2

This was a not-quite-so-recent thread about another Lenovo, but a dual video model with both an ATI and a differnt Intel video chip:
http://marc.info/?t=123659299200001&r=1&w=2

There are plenty of people with the GM965 on misc@, I'd post there for assistance.

@Carpetsmoker
I was going to suggest trying XXA accelration instead of default EXA, but that also does not helps:
http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-misc&m=124488326903516&w=2

You also load extmod twice (once normally, once without xfree86-dga extension), GLcore is propably not used any more, but these should also be harmless since some longer time Xorg knows better ...
Code:
Section "Module"
	Load "GLcore"
	Load "dbe"
	Load "dri"
	Load "extmod"
	Load "freetype"
	Load "glx"
	Load "record"
	Load "xtrap"

	SubSection "extmod"
		Option	"omit xfree86-dga"
	EndSubSection
EndSection
There was time when these two helped a little:
Code:
% export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1
% export INTEL_BATCH=1
You may also try this one:
Code:
Section "Extensions"
  Option "Composite" "enable"
EndSection
You may also check these in graphics card section:
Code:
  Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
  Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
  Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"
  Option "DRI" "true"
  Option "UseFBDev" "true"
  Option "PageFlip" "true"
  Option "TripleBuffer" "true"
  Option "FramebufferCompression" "false"
  Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
  Option "RenderAccel" "true"
  Option "EnablePageFlip" "true"
  Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
  Option "ExaNoComposite" "false"

  # Enable offload of Motion Compensation (XvMC)
  Option "LinearAlloc" "16384"
  Option "Cachelines" "2048"
  Option "XvMCSurfaces" "7"
... but I am no 'OpenBSD person' and these options are GENERAL intel driver options.
