Default Console hangs every 2.5 months

I have a more-or-less "stock" openBSD 4.7 install that is working great
as a PF bridging firewall... but every 2.5-3 months, it stops taking user
logins. SSH to it just hangs, and the console "login" prompt takes a username,
but never returns back to request a password. The system is still passing
firewall traffic, but is locked up.

I also saw this behavior on 4.5... I upgraded to 4.7 hoping it would go
away. It has not.

what is the best way to recover from this? A hard reset?

Is there any way to debug this so I can provide more feedback to the OpenBSD team?

I am using AMD64 on Sun fire x4100, 4 or maybe 8 G of ram

is it possible that some tables in PF are slowly filling up? Or a memory leak?
I dont see any messages on the console. Im looking at it right now, and
it still says "Fri, Aug 6" (the last boot time) and OpenBSD/amd64 ...
login:

thanks in advance for any pointers

-Matt

Without knowing more, it could be either. Memory leaks have been identified (& fixed...) this year:

...but anything which takes months to manifest itself is very hard to isolate.

Yes.

My suggestion would be to play with systat(1)'s pf & pigs switches attempting to isolate this further. I realize that this is easier said than done.

If one can force entry to ddb(4) with the sysctl ddb.console=1 and one of the triggers (see that man page), it may be possible to get a backtrace and dump for diagnosis.

However, hung consoles might not permit such triggers.
