my university has a strange marriage with M$.... we can download office 03, XP, project, visual studio, ms sql server etc. for free and use it for as long as we're a student

just for the record - I have no interest in giving MS any of my money

How do all the OpenSource Coders make any money giving away free code.??

This is a question folks at work often ask me..
My standard reply is that a lot of developers have "real jobs" and OpenSource is
a hobby..

Well, you really have to think here that not all GPL and BSD code is free ... it may be opensource but you still have to pay for it.

You're right, most coders do it as a hobby ...

... some get paid for developing open-source software.

What did the fish say when it swam into the concrete wall?

Hi guys, thought I'd pop in and say hello. Nice timing and all with the demise of that poor site. I wondered why the front page hadn't been updated for like two years!

Just got into FreeBSD as I was looking for a stable OS for a NAS server I'm building for home use. I've mainly been a windows tinkerer but drifted on to linux when my job required so I have a little basic knowledge and know a few commands. This time though I want to get right into it (I've tried in the past but it always seemed to take such monumental effort). Eventually I'd like to turn my NAS server into a dsl/wifi/gateway/router and do away with my Netgear router. But one step at a time.

BTW I'm not some Windows worshipper. It's just what I grew up on (after DOS and C64s that is. Yes I am that old). Anyway I'm sure we've all had this discussion many times so I'll stop now.

another "i don't like m$" post. a few weeks ago i had to install office 2008 on my boss's computer (vista business) and it took about 45 minutes. 45 minutes for that dam' office. on an xp ws takes about 10 minutes top. i don't use vista, i do not plan to use vista but that's sort of outrageous.

all the best,

just like my experiences with many applications recently released by microsoft, i just get bloody lost and frustrated using them:

MSN Live
office 2008
vista

This ribbon crap drives me nuts and their look and feel is so inconsistent!

Heh, I wish a simple reinstall of Office XP would take 10 minutes. Took 2 hours to do that on Friday. 30 minutes to uninstall the old version and reboot. Almost an hour to do a complete install of Office XP Pro, and reboot. Almost an hour to download and install all the updates and service packs for Office XP, and reboot. It was a very borring way to spend a Friday morning.

can't agree with you more. anyways windows is always full of surprises. the thing that `thrills` me is when something crash and pop up an err message saying "Fatal Error". why? how? where? --- questions without an answer.

all the best,
v

Speaking of error messages, take a look at this one. I received this when trying to add a trigger to an ms sql table
