Default OpenIndiana project leader resigns

This may well be the final end of OpenIndiana.

http://lwn.net/Articles/514046/

"...right from the very beginning, upset me, was the lack
of interest from the large commercial players benefiting from Illumos,
and from those who had been paid to work on Solaris at Sun."

"Right from the very beginning, Illumos was on life-support."

"Nobody in their right mind would use OI..."

Garrett D’Amore, illumos Founder's response to OpenIndiana project leader resigning. One quote in particular seems to signal the finality of OI.

http://gdamore.blogspot.com/2012/08/...signation.html

"While OpenIndiana served to carry on the banner of the OpenSolaris distribution, it was obviously a dead end..."

Meanwhile, Jörg Schilling has released SchilliX 0.8 – like OpenIndiana, SchilliX was a distribution based on the illumos core, but with version 0.8, Schilling says he has switched away from illumos because it had "decided to go into a direction of a codebase that is mostly usable only for fileservers and that is only supporting IPS packages". SchilliX is now based on SchilliX-ON, an OpenSolaris continuation project which tries to be "as POSIX and SVr5 compatible as possible". SchilliX can be downloaded as an ISO image.
