Default .Xauthority .Xlock ??????

Hi folks
Running ver 5.0 (5.3 on order from Calgary)

I am getting the following message when attempting to run X
Code:
    $ startx
       xauth:  file /home/jsg/.serverauth.19781 does not exist
       xauth:  error in locking authority file /home/jsg/.Xauthority
       xauth:  error in locking authority file /home/jsg/.Xauthority
