Default Keyboard dead - sometimes, but always in pairs

Sometimes, when logging in, the keyboard is just dead. Somewhere during the boot sequence, all three lights on the keyboard light up and all is well. Other times, there are no lights and I am forced to hard reset, and it always happens for a second time immediately after the first incident. Then, third time lucky, it works. I usually have this issue after restarting from another OS or a X11 crash.

It is just weird that I ALWAYS have to reset twice before my keyboard works again. I have swopped keyboards - same issue. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue?

-amd64 - NetBSD 6.1 - Haswell i5-4430.

Please post the complete output of dmesg(8). This the kernel's understanding of the hardware landscape. At this point, we have no idea whether this keyboard is attached via a 9-bin DIN connector, USB, wireless, etc. We also don't know anything about the manufacturer or model of the keyboard itself. There may be other questions readers may have, & because dmesg(8) output lists everything, you will be helping others help you.

We now know it's a USB keyboard.
Code:
uhidev0 at uhub3 port 5 configuration 1 interface 0
uhidev0: vendor 0x04d9 USB Keyboard, rev 1.10/3.10, addr 3, iclass 3/1
ukbd0 at uhidev0

I don't see any USB related kernel errors reported, but I do see detachment and attachment of a Kingston DataTraveler USB stick. Do you have keyboard problems if the stick is never connected?

Just now, I unplugged all USB sticks and performed a soft reboot from debian. From grub I loaded into NetBSD. The three lights on the board did not light up - it was dead. I powered down for a few seconds, and booted back into NetBSD. Dead keyboard. Reset this time, booted into NetBSD with a fully functional keyboard. It just does not seem logical. Is it perhaps something to do with the fact that my hardware is quite recent and that the kernel may be a bit outdated?

I tried NetBSD 6.1 on an old laptop and can report that there have been some recent changes integrating a kernel driver for touchpads. Modular xorg from pkgsrc did better than the monolithic xorg but still was buggy. You may want to review the change logs at
ftp://nyftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/ for the various versions and perhaps try one of the patched releases if the change log is encouraging. I do not know if the kernel driver for touchpads was backported into the 5x releases but that may be another option.

Yes and interestingly this info only appears in the second of the two dmesgs shown. Presumably the first dmesg is from a dead-keyboard boot, and the keyboard is not being initialized/recognized at all.

Question for tavrion: what happens if you unplug and re-plug-in the keyboard after a dead-keyboard boot? Does such reset make it work?

Okay, that is just weird. After a dead keyboard boot, I unplugged it and plugged it back in (same slot) and after the second reboot, it worked. What the ...

I have three suggestions:
  • Simplify the configuration. If you are plugging the keyboard into a USB hub, for the purpose of testing, plug the keyboard directly into a USB port on the motherboard. If other USB devices are attached at boot, disconnect them. You are wanting to find the most minimal configuration which works or exhibits this behavior.
  • Attempt to recreate this behavior with a different USB keyboard to determine if the problem is with the original keyboard.
  • Lengthen the time between reboots -- in the vicinity of 20 minutes. I question whether there is a capacitor somewhere which needs to further discharge before a change in state is detected.
Quote:
I usually have this issue after restarting from another OS or a X11 crash.
Is NetBSD the only operating system where this behaviour is exhibited? Is this a multiboot configuration?

I have two usb devices connected (not sharing a hub) - the mouse and keyboard. I will go mouse-less to see if I can recreate this problem.

I have already recreated the problem with a different keyboard. That is the first thing that came to mind when the problem presented itself - try a different keyboard. USB microsoft keyboard. I have not had this problem when I 'trialed' FreeBSD and I have never had this issue when booting into debian. I have re-installed NetBSD quite a few times and the keyboard problem is always present.

The configuration is as follow. Three physical drives.
30GB SSD with a 15 GB slice for NetBSD.
120GB SSD with Debian Wheezy
320GB HDD for storage stuff.

Grub (installed from the debian installation) defaults to wheezy but I have added a manual entry in Grub to boot to NetBSD.

I will try some of your suggestions this weekend - there must be a logical explanation for this. Thank you for the suggestions.
