Default 2D Graphics acceleration in X

Hi,

I'm trying to setup my ASUS ITX E35M-1 deluxe to work properly in X but there are some hickups and I don't really know how to look further.

Symptoms:
X works as it should but it is really slow. It's not the fastest hardware but even in an xterm when I issue the dmesg command I see text scrolling really slowly, like 5fps. (Currently I'm dual booting with a Debian, there X is behaving in an acceptable way, I have included the debian xorg.conf at the bottom if I try to apply it in OpenBSD I get an error: no screens found)

So I guessed the radeon driver (It's an ati HD6310) wasn't loaded. After some reading here I found out /var/log/Xorg.0.log contains the working xorg.conf configuration. Reading through that apparently the radeon driver is loaded?

Other symptoms I have I want to solve lateron but might be connected: The console is working well until I issue startx. If I go back with ctrl-alt-F1 or if I forcefully shutdown X with ctrl-alt-backspace, I get "no signal". If I blindly type "startx", X starts again but the console is gone.

My question is: where do I need to start l looking now? I don't need 3d acceleration, just my desktop to act a bit more responsive than it is now would be nice.

Also if my consoles would still work after I started X would be nice but is secondary at the moment.

I'm using a generic OpenBSD 5.3/amd64.

I'm also wanting to post my /var/log/Xorg.0.log but it's too long and if I try to split it up, the forum says I'm not permitted to post urls ... .

I don't know enough about the X.Org subsystems and Xenocara pacakging to be able to assist with this particular issue. However, I'd llike to point out that in 5.3, there are two radeon drivers: radeon(4) and radeonold(4). You might test your hardware with the older driver in 5.3, it may work and the older driver has 2D acceleration.

In -current, now, the driver has been revised to enable kernel mode setting (KMS). This change was made in August, and is beyond 5.4 which will be released in two weeks. You might experiment with -current and its KMS-enabled driver. You would need to download and install microcode, per the Following -current FAQ.

Ohh, I should grep my logs on "failed" before posting ...

My "X-skills" are below zero I'm afraid. I've read here at deamonforums that all the lines for a working xorg.conf are in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. How do I distill a proper xorg.conf that does work from this 75k character file or do I have to do that by hand?

I guess the xorg.conf file is the right tool for entervening with the automated config process or are there other methods to load a different driver when X starts?

I've looked at -current and that looks like I've got to compile the whole system myself. I'm only an OpenBSD newbie, that looks a bit too complicated for me now. Unless I'm wrong.

I just tested this on this little netbook that uses intel(4), and forced it to use the vesa driver, overriding the intel default. All I needed to do was create a four line .conf file in that directory with the following lines:

You can do something similar with radeonold, I'm sure.

The vesa driver ran, but it didn't work correctly, because I didn't bother setting a usable screen size. I was just checking to ensure it was this easy to override the default configuration.

Hi jggimi,

I've tried your advice on /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d but that didn't help. Probably because I'm doing it wrong somehow.

However, I'm now on -current now and all is working. I've got a descent framerate now. If I scroll with my browser there is no lag. Or very little, at least in proportion with the lightweight hardware I'm working with!

Thanks again for helping this newbie !!! I'm close to getting a workable and descent setup for a desktop.
