Default New to the forums, new to OpenBSD

Howdy! I just recently installed OpenBSD on an old 386 desktop machine here at work, and I'm looking forward to setting it up as a general desktop system to tinker with and learn. I haven't decided yet whether I'll put a DE (Xfce, if so), WM (Openbox), or just go with framebuffer + tmux.

I come from the land of Linux (Slackware and Debian sid), using it since 1999, and Mac OSX (used Macs since 1986). I have never used Windows, except as *cough* servers in my work environment; never ran Windows at home.

I'm very impressed with *BSD so far... it seems more complete and cohesive than Linux. I'm planning on returning to school this year to learn ISS (Information Systems Security) and network management, so OpenBSD seems like a natural, in that respect.

Recognize that the fvwm(1) window manager is installed by default when the X filesets are installed. The Calm window manager (cwm(1)) is too. More information on OpenBSD's customization of X (called Xenocara...) can be found in Section 11 of the project's official FAQ.

The environments described (Xfce, etc.) can all be found as officially available packages to OpenBSD. More information can be found in Section 15 of the FAQ.

In general, the FAQ document is the single best source of information for newcomers to OpenBSD running the latest release.

Thanks, ocicat! I've seen some nicely pimped-out fvwm and cwm setups, so I may just stick with those. I have looked through the officially available packages, and have found that everything I need is already there, so that's great! I'm also looking forward to picking up the highly rated "Absolute OpenBSD" book by Michael Lucas.

Default New to the forum, e-mails returned

Hello all, this is a old topic, but figured that would be better then starting a new one,
Anyway, I did receive the e-mail, with my username and password, I apologize, there was
a problem with the e-mail "bouncing", ..
My name, Garry, and I am new to open bsd, just installed it a few days ago.
Basically it is working well, as I learn more I will be able to add to it, as needed.
Any way, thank you for accepting my registration,
I was happy today, because I finally was able to mount a usb stick, this is going to help
me a lot,..So I was able to copy this to it:
dmesg-output.txt
Code:
OpenBSD 5.6 (GENERIC) #274: Fri Aug 8 00:05:13 MDT 2014

bios0 at mainbus0: AT/286+ BIOS, date 06/23/99, BIOS32 rev. 0 @ 0xfc000, SMBIOS rev. 2.5 @ 0xe1000 (5 entries)

Welcome aboard.

(It is best practice not to post in threads older than 6 months as info can get out of date.)
