"Virtual Secure Mode"

That is a hilarious sounding name [to me]. I guess the intention is to indicate some association with the notion of a "Virtual Machine" but on the face of it, "Virtual Secure Mode" (as opposed to "Actual Secure Mode"?) seems somewhat laughable.

Yes, it is associated with Virtual Machine. Not the traditional virtual machine reserving some pool of memory ahead-of-time. They use second level address translation, so Win10 is using hardware features designed to be used by hipervisors. There are two Windows NT kernels run at the same time. One is isolated from another.
