I installed Chromium in OpenBSD 5.2 a few days ago and haven't gotten any annoying messages.

Please keep in mind that this all is about the (semi-)automatic updating mechanism that Chrome uses.
If you start Chrome under Linux and when there is an newer version, it will notify you and tell you to upgrade. At this moment it will only display that you there is an update but will not guide you through the automatic update procedure because your Linux version, i.e GTK version is, too old or obsolete.
