Default CVS now has OpenBSD 4.5 tagged

From the Web interface to CVS, I see that the Makefile for i386:

http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvswe.../i386/Makefile

...now sports the OPENBSD_4_5_BASE tag. This means that most of the functionality to OpenBSD 4.5 has been solidified, & (most likely) only major issues found within the next week will be pushed back into this branch.

For those unfamiliar with the project's six month release cycle, every six months the head of the CVS repository gets additional scrutiny, & CD's are cut from code that has been deemed worthy of the project's reputation. Otherwise, development continues at CVS' head.

...& for those wondering why 4.5 is frozen at this point when the official release is not until 1 May, note that sufficient time has to be allocated to get a large number of CD's ordered, pressed, & received, so they can in turn be sent to those supporting the project by purchasing official CD sets. Orders for OpenBSD 4.5 should be announced on the official Website soon.

Help the project by ordering CD sets! You will feel better about yourself, & chicks will find you somewhat more attractive by becoming involved with a worthy effort.

Thank you, ocicat!

The time between repository tagging and the final cutting of CD-ROM images is a very busy time for a number of the developers, as they do final quality assurance and release engineering activities across fourteen different architectures.

As an additional comment, some may be curious as to the difference between the CVS tags OPENBSD_4_5_BASE & OPENBSD_4_5:
  • Once stabilized at the point where Theo, et. al. are satisfied with both stability, functionality, & quality, the code found at OPENBSD_4_5_BASE marks the file versions which constitute the official CD set. Once the CD images are pressed, no new files are checked into OPENBSD_4_5_BASE. This branch is to (always) represent what code was used for the CD's. Nothing more.
  • However, if fixes are later mandated for OpenBSD 4.5, those changes will be checked into the OPENBSD_4_5 branch. For those that follow -stable, this is the branch to track as stated in Section 5.3.3 of the FAQ:

    http://openbsd.org/faq/faq5.html#BldGetSrc

Note that new file versions could potentially be checked into the OPENBSD_4_5 up until the release of OpenBSD 4.6.
...and of course, HEAD represents the very latest file versions of OpenBSD which translates to -current. The developers live in the code here, not in the formalized versions. Consequently, all changes are made here unless they are deemed important enough to be retrofitted (with a modicum of testing...) into the OPENBSD_x_y branch.

The stable facts of our world:

  • OpenBSDs release cycle

there are just some things you just can't escape from xD

with 4.5, OpenBSD just might be overtaking another machine here.... hehe

Some significant patches were committed Sunday, followed by complete repository tagging. What's tagged in CVS now is extremely close to what will go on CDs and be released by ftp/http/afs on May 1. There may be some further changes included as part of necessary release engineering efforts.
