Error in locking Authority
I was unable to become SU when logged in as a user. So I went to /etc/group and, using vi, appended by username to the end of the line: wheel:*:0:root,JerrywBSD
all was well, I could use SU (I've got OpenBSD 4.5 installed on a Mac iBook, G4) the following day I logged in (a somewhat tortuous process, subject for another thread). When I typed "startkde", the system booted me out with: Error in locking authority file /home/JerrywBSD/.Xauthority I can log in as root and start KDE but cannot do so as a regular user. I'm assuming there is some linkage with my previous evenings edit of the /etc/group file (tho I'm quite sure I did not touch anything else in that file) Any help? Jerry |

It seems likely that you accidentally started X while using su, did you check the permissions on your .Xauthority file?
Please do not start X as root. |

Thanks
Well. there was a enormous variety of advice out there in Google-land (and here). I did the easiest suggested fix, deleting the .Xauthority file in my home folder. It is apparently re-created at next login.
That did it..once....following login, I was back with the error. I've got my wife's "old" G4 iBook and have attempted a variety of distributions on it. OpenBSD has a variety of little nagging items on this iBook, and I shall wander off and try another distribution. My main computer is a Linux machine that I built, currently running Linux Mint. I've wanted to try a Unix OS for quite a while...and had a few unsuccessful install attempts on my main computer, so this install has been a success of sorts. I'm learning - thanks for your help Jerry W |

I tried OpenBSD 3.9 once in an old G3 iBook (2001, dual usb) and I remember having to manually unpack the tar files into the HD (the installer segfaulted before getting to where it unpacks the tar files). It worked fine though.

The installer is a shell script, you're saying ksh faulted? that's weird.. perhaps things would be better in 4.6.
