Default NetBSD on a laptop: trying to make it work

Apologies for the disconnected threads.
My problem also comes to this part.

Any definitive howto's for NetBSD on a sony vaio, especially model pcg-grz530?

The laptop was a gift from my girlfriend's mother who got it from her job. Lost property, unclaimed, and vendor wouldn't take it back. They never had any reason to access the BIOS.
Currently I am downloading source sets. Will follow kernel config options.

APM or ACPI?

Read that desktop background should be dark and minimalist window manager would be better to use. Windowmaker, no?

Physical device: Will a laptop cooling pad help? I am ignorant- without knowledge- of the use and ?proficiency? of such a device.

Laptop will run from 2 hours to 2 days before it shuts down. Any suggestions for controlling this would be nice. I need to have it functional for a 4 - 6 hour period with 12 hour breaks between.

I've used the FreeBSD manual page for copying the executable for a window manager.

Some packages from FreeBSD.org won't download. wget //source/url?

Grub is one of these.

Question again on linux emulation. Use netbsd40 compat?

I am searching, doing, etc. The manual(s) do(es) not have a howto for any of these questions.

Default

Editing GENERIC.

Uncommented acpiverbose and apm.
Wrong move?
System now reboots constantly.

I see the sony I/O controller and jog dial in the config.
