Linux is not UNIX! Face it! It is not an insult. It is fact: GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not UNIX”.

@Vermaden: Yes. I find _links_ very easy to use, but it's not installed by default like _lynx_ is. I've chosen to install as few programs as possible due to buffer overruns ( memory leaks ) being the greatest source of vulnerability to any system on Mac, Windows, Linux, etc on the web. People should be educated about [ memory leaks ] and the fact that these holes are how hackers get root access.

I run OpenBSD/i386-current on my Lenovo ThinkPad SL510 as a desktop operating system. OpenBSD/i386 4.7 is running on my IBM ThinkCentre which is currently a DHCP server, wireless access point with pf (NAT/firewall/etc).

OpenBSD/loongson-current on a Lemote FuLoong 2F which serves as a NTP server to the pool.ntp.org, and also OpenBSD/loongson-current on a Lemote YeeLoong 8101B which serves as DNS caching server.

I have an old HP NetServer which is currently incomplete but will soon be utilized as a failover firewall with OpenBSD/i386-current.

I had to install a supported RAID card from another Dell server to get it installed and running. Currently, I use it as an FTP server for g4u images.

I'm looking for a new server to replace this. It will continue to be an FTP server, but I need to add SMB file server functionality to it. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I'm running OpenBSD 4.9 on Sun SPARCstation5 (SS5), 85 Mhz, 512MB RAM, 2.1 GB HD and ULTRA1, runs a lot faster on ULTRA1 167 MHz, 368 MB RAM, 2.1GB HD.

Default OpenBSD 5.1 Advancements

I am pleased to say that OpenBSD 5.1 has really advanced in its hardware detection. The 4 series OpenBSD would not boot on my Gateway DX4300 and this was a common problem with most Unix based operating systems - FreeBSD, NetBSD and Solaris. Each would either experience a kernel panic or the video would not be able to run. With OpenBSD 5.1 amd64, the system installs, boots, recognizes my scanner, printer and other devices. I am very impressed with the advances.

I have attached the output of the dmeg command.

My home router/server:

Alix 2D3( http://pcengines.ch/alix2d3.htm ) + CF Card + OpenBSD 5.1:

- adsl 6Mb via pseudo-device pppoe0
- pf(altq+hfsc), queueing(hfsc) for 15 hosts and few services
- NAT(plus natpmpd)
- UniFi Controller(running jre 1.7 and mongodb) for few UniFi access points
- Controlling APC Smart 1000VA via com via apcupsd
- EKG on screen
- irssi for IRC on screen
- twirssi( http://twirssi.com ) Twitter via terminal
- Simple stats via ipfm( http://scripfm.sourceforge.net )
- small www server(apache) for few things, next time(OpenBSD 5.2) will be nginx
- ntpd daemon(Alix 2D3 without RTC battery)
- hardware encryption 128bit Cipher aes128-cbc via SoC Geode on Alix
- enable LEDs via gpioctl, LEDs(front panel) blinking right now, looks awesome

5-6watts idle 0dB!

dmesg(OpenBSD 5.1):

I use OpenBSD 5.1, 5.2 and Current on multiple boxes.

In no particular order:

Soekris net5501 and net6501.
HP Proliant MicroServer N40L servers.
HP XW6400 and XW6600 workstations.
HP Proliant DL380 servers.
... and some random HP notebook that I use as a PXE server.

I've sent all the dmesg info to OpenBSD. I can post here if requested.

Default DEC VaxStation 4000 Model 90!

DEC (d|i|g|i|t|a|l) VaxStation 4000 model 90.
VT520 Terminal.
Allied Telesis CentreCom AT-210T (AUI 10base5 to 10baseT [cat5] network adapter/dongle).

My DEC (d|i|g|i|t|a|l) VaxStation 4000 model 90 has a staggering 32 MB of RAM and 4x2.1 GB hardrives! I have one 2.1 GB HD dedicated to OpenBSD 5.2 but am for now keeping 3 installs of VMS on the other 3 HDs until I know what to do with them.

A VT520 terminal is my way of accessing the machine. The machine does have a frame buffer for a monitor but I do not have a monitor that will connect with it (it needs one with BNC connectors and the ability to sync on Green [SOG]).

dmesg:

That looks awesome, emigrant! I've been looking at those ALIX boards for a firewall on and off for years but have never bought one. Currently using an Intel Atom (truncated dmesg because who needs to know how many USB ports I have):
