Default Remote Installation of *BSD

Hello,

Certainly *BSD can be installed over the network (i.e., NFS, FTP, etc.). But, usually that is precipitated by putting in some sort of boot media - either from flash or disk.

What if you wanted to install *BSD without being physically there. Say, a brand new server is installed and it is in Europe - but you're in New York - and you want to put *BSD on it with a fresh hard drive. Or say that you're data is hopelessly corrupted but the hardware is fine - you need to reinstall *BSD but the server is 3000 miles away. Or say that the server currently has Linux or Windows on it and you want to migrate to *BSD.

Is it possible to remotely install *BSD?

I wrote an elaborate post, but I don't believe it's worth inclusion... a modified bsd.rd kernel exists for OpenBSD that includes an OpenSSH daemon, but that alone will not allow you to install an OS on the system.

You need to be sure it's a real system, not a emulated or "Virtual Private Server", and you require permission from the people you're leasing from.

It's possible, I'm not going to lie... but you would need to prepare a disk image with the above custom kernel and write it directly to your servers hard drive, but if you accidentally make a mistake, you won't be able to fix it.

There's the depenguinator that allows you to install BSD over an existing Linux installation. However, I am unaware of a mechanism, short of netbooting from a local source, to install BSD from "scratch."
