Default SPDIF not working

Hello,

I'm quite new to OpenBSD. I've been reading loads of man pages but some (ok most) have a steep learning curve. For the last couple of days I've been desperately trying to get the digital output of my soundcard to work. So far I know it's driver is azalia and that I should have outputs.mode=digital in my mixerctl. If I play music the optical light comes on but there is no sound. Analog works fine btw. Does anyone know how to get it going?
Thanks a lot

It looks like you've done what you can with mixerctl(1) settings. All I can see of note in your dmesg is:
Code:
azalia0 at pci2 dev 0 function 1 "ATI Radeon HD 6670 Audio" rev 0x00: msi
azalia0: no supported codecs
You might want to try a -current snapshot, and see if you get different results. -current is now pretty close to what will be -release 6.5 soon.

azalia0 is the graphics card, the audio for hdmi, which is not supported.
It's azalia1 that I'm trying to get going.

dmesg | grep azalia:

Code:
azalia0 at pci2 dev 0 function 1 "ATI Radeon HD 6670 Audio" rev 0x00: msi
azalia0: no supported codecs
azalia1 at pci0 dev 27 function 0 "Intel 82801JI HD Audio" rev 0x00: msi
azalia1: codecs: Realtek/0x0889
audio0 at azalia1

The computer I'm posting from has an azalia(4) audio interface, but unfortunately I don't have any optical S/PDIF devices to test it with. You're correct that azalia1 is the relevant device. I notice the following two lines in your mixerctl output:
Code:
outputs.SPDIF_source=dig-dac-2:3
...
outputs.SPDIF2_source=dig-dac-0:1
Could it be a signal routing problem? (I'm also fairly new to OpenBSD after ~20 years on Linux, so treat my comments accordingly).

Could it be a signal routing problem? (I'm also fairly new to OpenBSD after ~20 years on Linux, so treat my comments accordingly).
I tried switching it around but it won't let me (or I'm doing it wrong

Code:
mixerctl outputs.SPDIF_source=dig-dac-0:1
mixerctl: Bad enum value dig-dac-0:1
Maybe there is way to turn azalia0 off somehow?

I believe there is. See the KERNEL MODIFICATION section of the config(8) man page, and create a test kernel you can then boot, or disable during boot with boot -c.

I tried boot -c but I'm not sure what to disable. I tried looking for azalia but there are no separate devices so when I disable it I have no sound at all.

The azalia(4) driver dynamically allocates instances on discovery. It is possible to use the UKC add command to manually define azalia0 and azalia1 per the attachments in your dmesg(8). For example, using add, change, and disable, I was able to create the following azalia driver instances, though I cannot test the resulting kernel for function:
Code:
ukc> find azalia
89 azalia0 at pci* disable dev 0 function 1 flags 0x0
90 azalia1 at pci* dev 0x1b function 0 flag 0x0
91 azalia* at pci* dev -1 function -1 flags 0x0
More details on using UKC can be found in boot_config(8).

If I add devices at boot (boot -c) then the graphics card and soundcard just get a different number ( 1 and 2 instead of 0 and 1)
If I use config on a running kernel it doesn't see two devices but still just azalia. Am I suppose to create the devices? I assume they were already there on a booted system

When you use boot -c, it runs the UKC interactive utility *before* scanning for devices on your hardware. Changes are to the kernel's standard configuration of drivers, and it is similar to using # config -o /test.bsd -e /bsd, followed by booting the test kernel.

My workstation has an azalia driver active, but only one, so I'm not going to be able to test a kernel on running hardware with two azalia peripherals.

I've given up. I think the digital output on my soundcard just isn't supported yet or I need to reroute the audio. Since I'm a openbsd noob I probably have a lot of reading to do.
For now I settle for analog

Problem solved!
After reading loads of man pages I had a lightbulb moment.
In mixerctl it says 'outputs.SPDIF_source=dig-dac-2:3'
In the sndiod man page I read that you can route any channel to any connection, so setting sndiod with flag -c2:3 sound came out my digital output
Hooray

With "a lightbulb moment", you mean an "AHA Erlebnis ;-).

It's my first step in not feeling too stupid to run OpenBSD
