Default Automounting drives

Hi there. Is there a method for automounting drives (ie - cdrom's, ipod's, usb drives, etc...) on 4.3 and up? I didn't see anything on the faq.

See the amd(8) man page.

Thanks. Looked through that. Also found this:

It's geared towards Fbsd, but should still work under Obsd, should it not?

Other than FreeBSD starts daemons in a different way that OpenBSD, & FreeBSD names devices differently from OpenBSD, sure, this article is the bomb!

There are a number of points which do translate, but implementing that article verbatim is fraught with problems.

  • The HowTo is dated from 2002; along with differences between F and O BSDs that ocicat mentioned, time also changes functionality of features, so approach any suggested procedures with diligence.
  • The author states he does not understand the use of an amd(8) operand he recommends setting, nor is there an explanation of ANY of the other options he recommends. Be sure you understand them before using applying them to your environment. Examples: the -a option to set the actual mount point for amd processing, and the -c option to set cache duration.
These kinds of things are typical with HowTos.

In general, unless you understand everything in a HowTo and exactly what parts do and do not apply to your environment, you should never assume they will meet your needs. They can be useful to improving understanding of a function or feature... but ... they should never be blindly followed due to the assumption that they are correct, up-to-date, and appropriate.
