Default Speed

Also how can i view the speed FreeBSD copies files?

ie would be nice if "cp" had a facility like "wget" that shows you transfer rate.

Or any other utilities?

in general this holds true for all FS.

if you just want the average:

$ time cp ...

# if copying from/to the same disk
$ echo $file_size / $time_taken \* 2 | bc

# realtime:
$ iostat -dt da 1

You could be using my laptops slow hard drive and 802.11g connection to transfer files to another system connected to the router via Ethernet at a rate of 900~1500KB/s through SCP instead :-P

also gstat gives you some pretty detailed stats in realtime as well. It does need to be executed with root perms however

Use dd rather than cp, when it finishes it gives a summary of how many bytes were transferred and how long it took.
