on a par with google by now, maybe. i heard it said somewhere in
the past year that facebooks' objective is to sell you products, and
googles outlook is that you're the product. i'm used to company's
trying to sell me things, but these two operations seem to be on
a mission. almost predatory.

It's almost 2017 and in this brave new world, we have a global, information-based economy.

Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, ... and many others collect data and sell information to advertising companies. To varying degrees, advertising revenues represent a major portion of their total revenues. It's their business model. Their way of making money. It's cash. Lots of it. And in the end, that's basically what companies do and why they exist in the first place.

Business 101 for ya.

So you're free to take it or leave it. If you don't want to be spied on, power off that phone of yours and unplug all those Ethernet cables and WiFi dongles, toss your payment cards in the trash as well, yada yada yada.

It is not a matter of powering off, unplugging and throwing away. It is a matter of limiting what information one makes available. The problem is most people are not aware how much they are being spied on. There is nothing wrong with informing people so they can improve security of their information.

@Beastie

I understand basics about their business model, but it is not wrong to be aware of how it works. It is not wrong to be choosy with whom you are sharing personal data.

and of course, it's not a matter of sharing, at least not in the sense that i have always
understood the term. These large, very rich companies are searching for every bit of data
on us that they can find, and then collating all the data on a given person. must be an
impressive repository of info. i wonder what is done with all that info? i recall at one time
google's motto was "don't be evil". that puts my mind at ease...

The information is used for two purposes.
1) The idea is to provide advertisements tailored to each user based on the personal information gathered. Although they collect hordes of information not relevant to the task.
2) Companies that collect information sell it. Their customers are advertisers, governments and other "interested" parties.

How much of purpose number two is done by Google, Facebook, Yahoo, etc. will vary. Google say they do not sell data, but storing copies of every e-mail message sent and received by their users casts doubt on that claim. In the past information was power. Today it is money. (It still is power for governments who can use information to monitor people, but it is now also a large source of revenue for companies.)
