Mobile Broadband
Has anyone had any luck with mobile broadband on OpenBSD?
Specifically using either the "3 USB E156G", "3 USB E160G" or the "ZTE MF627 USB" and on 3 in the United Kingdom. I'm looking to host a web server serving plain-text files. When using a mobile broadband package, are you assigned an internet facing IP address? |

A lot of "mobile broadband" devices are supported under OpenBSD, via umsm(4).. or one of the many other similar drivers.
Once attached, they appear as serial devices.. you dial your provider via PPP. As I always say, the best way to determine support is to attach the device and read the dmesg output. Good luck.. |

Aha. You mean plug it in and see if it works?
I'll be taking out an 18-month contract at 10GBP/month. Saying that. I just checked the umsm man page and it does support the Huawei Mobile E160g which is one of the ones they offer. So there's a good chance of it working. So I'll go with buying one once I've worked out if the IP address it's assigned is accessiable from the general internet. I know using internet on my phone only gives me a 10.x.x.x address which I believe is private. |

I think it depends on your providers network.. obviously some might assign private addresses to their clients.
Even if your ISP assigns you a publicly accessible address, it's still possible they'll filter traffic at some level.. Anyway, I do recommend searching the mailing list archives... even if OpenBSD supports the device, you'll still need to configure ppp for your carrier. |
