Default Advice on submitting a bug report? (Xorg freezing on Lenovo Ideapad 110s)

Hi all,

I am a bit of a noob on submitting bug reports but I have a machine that has been freezing on current for a good month now. I can recreate it by playing a video on youtube and just letting it go for awhile and eventually the screen will turn black. I can make it happen faster by opening other applications, such as evince and libreoffice. If I use lightweight applications I can avoid it for a good amount of time, but usually eventually it freezes. It seems like it is happening when memory gets full and graphical resources are under load (i.e changing the size of a window playing a video, or alt tabbing quickly through windows)

I can still see the mouse cursor, but can not move it. I also can not switch to another console, and the machine in question has no serial port. It does appear to be dropping into ddb although I can not see it. I have tried ps and trace, but when I reboot all i see in /var/log/messages is "syslogd message dropped, error 57", which I assume is the debugger failing to store the messages.

I have figured out that by typing "boot crash" and hitting space and then return repeatedly I can get it to do a core dump. A few of them I can get some info out of with gdb, though I have no idea what I am looking at.

I would like to examine this as much as possible before bothering the developers, so if anybody has any tips, I would be grateful.

This is if do gdb -> file bsd.0 -> target kvm bsd.0.core
Code:
Reading symbols from /var/crash/bsd.0...(no debugging symbols found)...done.

Hello, and welcome!

There are two types of bug reports. A sendbug(1) report via bugs@, and an informal "report" via misc@. Informal "reports" are posted for many purposes. You could certainly post what you've posted here and request advice for further diagnosis.

Additionally, you might try building a kernel with debugging symbols. It should make a gdb(1) backtrace more useful. Helpful man pages: crash(8) for analysis, options(4) for adding symbols, release(8) for kernel building, as well as the FAQ chapter on building from source.

Good luck!

Thank you for your response. Some of those I had read, a couple not, I have read them now.

A few things I am not clear on.

1. Does GENERIC have symbols built in to it that can be turned on at boot? Or do I have to build from source?

2. If building from source I am pretty sure I need to add makeoptions DEBUG="-g", but where do most people add it? In GENERIC? in GENERIC.MP? (my machine is multiprocessor). Do I copy GENERIC and add it to my copy?

3. I have built with the above option in GENERIC, and it produces a bsd.gdb. Is this kernel multi or single processor? Does it matter?

My answers:
  1. No and yes, respectively.
  2. You are correct, a kernel with symbols is produced with makeoptions DEBUG="-g", and best practice is to create a new kernel with a new name, such as "VNS3", as GENERIC and GENERIC.MP configurations are provided by the Project and should not be altered. Even though all you are doing is adding symbols during kernel build which are then stripped later.
The configuration file's include command makes this very easy. Take a look at the GENERIC.MP config file to see how it includes the GENERIC config file within and then provisions two additional options.
If you publish this dmesg in a bug report, you would just note that your VNS3 kernel is GENERIC or GENERIC.MP with the DEBUG=-g makeoption added to collect more information.
  3. The GENERIC kernel is uniprocessor, and this kernel is the "/bsd.sp" file found in the root directory of multiprocessor installations. For diagnostics, if you are able to recreate the problem with GENERIC as well as GENERIC.MP, collecting traces from ddb(4) is easier if you only have one CPU's data to review.

NICE! Now I can see function calls.

Just noting here, and maybe I did something wrong, but I had to copy bsd.gdb to the root of my drive myself so that I could boot from it. The bsd.sp, and bsd.mp kernels did not have debugging symbols. ALSO bsd.gdb was located in /usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/MYKERNELNAME after building the kernel, but after building userland it dissapears. Not sure where it goes. But like I said I just copied it beforehand.

Your backtrace shows that the kernel was in drm routines for i915 video before the trap was reached. It looks like you may have enough information to produce a useful bug report.

Procedurally, you shouldn't need to boot from a kernel with symbols. Generally, one boots the stripped kernel, and only uses its unstripped .gdb kernel file with gdb(1).

Rebuilding userland should not normally be needed for kernel debugging. But with video drivers that may not always be the case. It is possible you may receive patches for X.Org (with its source tree and build tools packaged together as "Xenocara" on OpenBSD).
