For those wondering if these changes to BIGMEM will be available in May when OpenBSD 4.9-release is scheduled to be released, the answer is "no".

This work is being done in -current which will eventually become OpenBSD 5.0-release slated for release in November 2011. The code base for OpenBSD 4.9-release was frozen mid-February 2011.

It's also possible that the change could get reverted at the last moment, before 5.0 is tagged in CVS.

Hopefully that won't happen.

Very good point.

As mentioned in the discussion cited by rocket357, enabling BIGMEM now is done hoping that the major bugs will be caught during this development cycle. If not, the code will likely remain in 5.0, but in a disabled state. Definitive decisions will be made towards the end of the development period.

For those who would like/want BIGMEM to remain, install -current & report any problems found. Reporting problems is crucial.

That's an extremely good point, and one that begs for everyone to test BIGMEM on amd64 and turn in as many problem reports (good, solid bug reports) as possible.

Thanks for pointing this out, BSDfan666.
