HP/Compaq NX6110 Install
Hi learned members of the BSD community at large,
I have a relatively old Compaq NX6110 which I'm having trouble installing BSD onto, despite reading in a few places on the web that this laptop should work with a bit of nudging here and there. From the NetBSD 5.1 installation disk it makes no difference which option I select at the boot menu (i.e. acpi, smp etc.), and always hangs at wd0: (hard drive info goes here) I notice a few lines of the dmesg higher up report uhci errors, such as uhci1: host controller process error uhci1: host controller halted Out of curiosity I had a go with an OpenBSD disk, which also gets as far as uhci1: host controller process error uhci1: host controller halted uhci_freex: xfer=0xd1deb100 not busy, 0x4f4e5155 I can boot OpenBSD by disabling the uhci module but then there's no NIC. So any ideas on how I can get past this hanging issue using NetBSD? I'm relatively new to BSD, coming from Linux and Solaris. TIA John_ |

There was a lot of work done in the USB subsystem after OpenBSD 4.8, wait for 4.9 or try a snapshot.
It's quite likely that the USB controller is quirky or no longer functional, you could go into the BIOS and attempt to disable it there. Is your Ethernet controller attached via USB? There isn't much we can do without a complete dmesg and/or a pcidump, even then, bugs should be reported (..with as much info as possible) to the developers. |

There is an archived wiki at NetBSD for this specific laptop that I found using the Google search terms
Quote:
Most of the concerns I saw revolved around firmware for the wireless card though I did not spend alot of time looking. There did not seem to be the type of problem in the NetBSD wiki dmesg so I would wonder if your bios is detecting wd0, ie mis-configured bios, bad hard drive or other hardware problem. @BSDfan666: Hmm. The network adapter is internal. I was presuming that by disabling UHCI I'd somehow killed it, but as I can't boot without disabling UHCI I can't confirm that theory! I'll look through dmesg when I get home later and look for any broadcom/NIC errors.
@shep: Yeah I found that page before posting, it doesn't yield anything relevant afaics. @classicmanpro: Thanks, but I also found your solution before posting. As stated in my OP, it makes no difference which option I select from the boot menu. If anyone has any further ideas I'd sure appreciate them, the BIOS on this thing is rather limited regarding options! |

@shep: Ah. Looks like you're right. I discovered the hard disk is bad.
My former experiences with ACPI must have clouded my judgement. Anything can happen with bad disks, sorry to have wasted your time, guys. Thanks for your input. |
