Default KMS

I have been reading man pages and googling and, I have either overlook or looking at the wrong information. But my old radeon I have in a desktop is support and wanted to try out KMS. KMS is activated before the kernel is loaded so, I'm assuming the boot(8) command -c option will bring up a menu to type radeondrm? I'm assuming this would active KMS and by default UMS is activated? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
