Install CD hangs, does not boot
I have a Install CD I made for OpenBsd 6.1 and it worked fine on 2 other computers.
How ever on a 3rd computer, it is not booting completely. It does start, normal , but when it gets to this point: Code:
wskbd0 at pckbd0: console keyboard ,wsdisplay0 npx0 at isa0 port port 0xf0/16: reported by CPUID: using exception 16 Any ideas ? I don't know of any way to get 'dmesg' or more details, well maybe , I had another CD that was for NetBsd, and it installed ok, Would the 'dmesg' output from that be of any use ? Thanks

Thanks,
Interesting ,.... There is a lot of "failed" comments at the end, the very last one says Code:
>>>probing for pci2 failed also a "ex0" failed, "ep0 failed",... there is more but I have some chores I have to do,when I get back I will write it all down. Thanks

I was not able to even think of what possible 'man' pages I should look at, so this is a big help. How ever the list of Quote:
In a nut shell , it does not look like I will be able to install OpenBsd, on this particular hardware, it is a pretty old computer , a friend gave it to me. It may take me a while to try some things based on what the manuals say, but I have my doubts, and since NetBsd sort of "just worked", and is installed , I may just go with that. Another thought, is to try some older version of OpenBsd, and see if that works better. Anyway, thanks for pointing me to those 2 manuals and this: Quote:

I finally was able to install.
I ended up formating the HD as fat32, after that the OpenBsd install CD booted just fine, and installation was successful. I am using it now , to post this. Thanks,.......

It is kind of a mystery, I never had any problem on other computers
when booting and installing. All though netbsd was able to boot, and install, it was not easy, and things really were not working well. Besides that, I wanted OpenBsd. Later I tried some other install CDś, Minx3, and also FreeDos and encountered similar problem. Minix3 booted, but could not read the drive, there for could not install. Then with FreeDos, it did boot, but could also not read the drive, that is when I decided to try formatting, in fact I was considering installing FreeDos. Any way, once I formatted it, I decided to try one more time, with OpenBsd and to my surprise the install CD booted fine, and I was able to install. I don't know, ----- Like I said, the computer was given to me, it is old the HD is supposed to be new, he had managed to install windows7 on it, but I did not want that, maybe that had something to do with it ? I believe the computer would have had windowsXP ,when it was new. Here is the dmesg output now: Code:

There have been some issues with EFI-booting systems which are expecting Secure Boot keys. But that is not what you apparently experienced here.
When you were having problems, the kernel was successfully booted. But it failed to probe a PCI bus successfully. That indicates a hardware problem of some kind. Odds are low that the reformat was responsible for the correction. |
|
|||
...more likely you banged the desk in frustration, shook up the hardware and now it works!
So, consider opening the machine up, vacuuming the dust bunnies and reseating all the PCI cards properly. |
