Not sure, guess it's something to do with the fact that on amd64 there are some additional steps to take.
I know that the V86 extension aren't supported in long mode, so calling BIOS interrupts for configuring VESA VBE modes needs a small real mode emulator. |

I not 100% sure myself, but I caught a few (last year) threads here and on the INTERNET that said INTEL drop support for a certain kind of open-source driver that AMD users needed. It seems that it brought a halt to FreeBSD/PcBSD future support for GNOME-3. I hope I was not completely off track ... as usual.
http://forums.pcbsd.org/showthread.php?t=14493 over look what I be be saying. I be googling BSD and programming like 20/7 sometimes, I be needing sleep |

I think you may be confused sharris, VESA doesn't do what you think it does. It is simply a legacy fallback driver generally used on systems where the video chipset is not supported by a native driver.

The big news is that people running the amd64 version of FreeBSD can now use vidcontrol to create high-resolution text consoles (1024x768 for example), instead of the generic 80x25 console.
This has absolutely nothing to do with X11, graphics drivers, fall-back, etc. This is only about the text-mode console. |
