Default Laptop recomendations

Hello Laptop Users

I am trying to get a good recommendation on Laptops to consider for running TrueOS.

My requirements are:

* Must have Nvidia Video Graphics built in
* Must have CD drive (so I can replace it with a second hard drive for ZFS Mirror)
* Must be at least Dual Core.

I just thought it would make life easier to get system recommendations from those running FreeBSD or TrueOS on this already. I will likely search Ebay for my final choice.

Judging from some things on FreeBSD forums, I'm not sure that dual card laptops work that well withTrueOS (or any of the BSDs), but am not sure. I see someone was having problems with CURRENT, which is what TrueOS uses as a base if i'm right.

General thoughts. Both Free and OpenBSD are usually behind Linux in hardware support. While a wireless card will probably work, it often won't have the speeds that are gotten with Linux--for example, the iwm driver doesn't do 802.11.ac In practice, I've found this means that a local LAN transfer might be 20-50MB in Linux, on occasion, 11-12 MB in CURRENT (but rarely) and generaly, in Free and OpenBSD about 2-3MB.

What did you mean by: "dual card"

The forums all seem to be discussing IF one should use FreeBSD (or variant) on a Laptop.

Since I have already done it and already decided I will do it again. I just want to know what hardware any of you recommend?

What are you using in your laptop running FreeBSD or TrueOS?

I'm sorry, dual card refers to laptops that have both an integrated Intel card and a separate NVida card. I think it's more of a gaming thing. (Not a gamer so not that sure).
On my one laptop with a Haswell card, I'm using FreeBSD-CURRENT.. I think that TrueOS may have trouble multibooting if you're not using UEFI, which I don't use.

My newer laptop--I say newer but it's from 2013, is a yoga2 with a Haswell ULT video and an Intel 7260 dual band wireless card. Video works with the drm-next-kmod port. Wireless works with the iwm driver, but only gets speeds of 2-3MB over the LAN, though on RARE occasion, it's gone up to 10-11MB.

The zfs file system has the ability to mirror/snapshot your data on the fly. If you have a large amount of data, this can take significant RAM, CPU and hard drive R/W. ECC memory is a plus but not generally available on laptops. IMHO, the zfs file system is more appropriate for servers, not laptops.

FreeBSD has a web page on supported NVidia, Intel and AMD/Radeon graphics.

Also be aware that Lenovo and HP have some hard ware restrictions in their bios that impacts the ability to swap out the wireless card - not sure if this impacts CD -> HD.

ThinkPads T420s/T520/W520/W530/T430/T530 work without any issues, with 11.1-RELEASE.

ThinkPad T460/T470/... work with 12-CURRENT and DRM-NEXT.

Thanks for answering my thread question with a direct and to the subject answer list of one or more laptops you recommend.

I got a TP W530 on Ebay and it works Great so far with TrueOS.

Code:
LENOVO THINKPAD W530
PROCESSOR = Intel Core i7-3740QM 2.7Ghz (Turbo to 3.7Ghz)
RAM = 8GB DDR3 MEMORY
DISC DRIVE = DVD-R (SERIAL ULTRABAY ENHANCED)
OPERATING SYSTEM = NO OS INSTALLED
GRAPHICS = NVIDIA Quadro K1000M (2GB GDDR3) / Intel HD Graphics 4000
DISPLAY = 15.6" (1920x1080)
The unit came with No HDD. I purchased 2, new, (~$50ea)

and a HDD Caddy for the UltraBay

I installed the 2 drives and then installed TrueOS w/zMirror

I had an issue with the latest iso because it had issues with the NVIDIA card so I used and older version and installed: TrueOS-Desktop-2016-12-27-x64-DVD.iso Then let it upgrade to the latest version. ( I later learned I should disable the nVidia for the install)

WiFi is working fine.

I know you already made a purchase, but in the interest of posterity...

I have 2 Thinkpad T61 running FreeBSD with the dreaded Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M GPU, known for overheating if made after 2008. Mine weren't and perform fine with the nvidia-driver-304 port.

One has an Intel Core2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.0GHz and the other a T7700 @ 2.4 GHz. Each have 4GB RAM but supposedly upgradable to 8GB RAM. They come with a DVD burner in an UltraBay and can be swapped out for another HDD.

If you know what to look for as far as signs of heavy use and are looking at the right time some sweet deals can be had on ebay. Lease returns are a crap shoot and it's the luck of the draw which one they pick out. Look for sellers with high rep, what seems like a good deal might be best passed on for something a few $$$ more from a more reputable seller.

Single owners you should be able to know about what you're getting and can query them about it.

I paid a little over $50 for the T61 I'm on now and prefer to use it over my more powerful W520 OpenBSD machine, which has Nvidia Optimus and worked out-of-the-box with OpenBSD..

I recently purchased a Dell Latitude E6420 from Dell Refurbished for $229.00; after tax and shipping it was $273.87.

Quad core i7-2760QM CPU @ 2.40GHz
Nvidia NVS 4200M
4GB DDR3 1333MHz expandable to 8GB (upgrading soon).
140GB 7200RPM HD (upgrading soon).

It was listed as Cosmetic Grade B but it almost looks and feels like new. This thing was built like a tank which is perfect for my application - rather than carrying it around as a portable computer, I need a small, self-contained server.

I am trying the 390.48 driver from Nvidia's site and I am building a custom releng/11.1 system with 2018Q1 ports all from source. If that goes well (so far so good), after the hardware upgrades I will build it again then this machine will spend most of the rest of its life on a shelf.

Side note: # make -j8 buildworld on this thing was very impressive! I started building FreeBSD from source during the 2002-2003 era, probably on a single-core Pentium II or some other similar thing maybe running at a couple of hundred MHz. Back then, builds would take all night - like start it in the evening and it is still running in the morning. I didn't time this relatively modern machine but it seems like it finished in less than an hour. It finished so quickly that I spent a few moments looking for a failure.

Anyway, I am very impressed with this Dell machine and Dell Refurbished. I am not certain that my experience would be repeatable, I might have just gotten very lucky, but I might test that and buy another refurbished machine from them. Gee, I sound like a shill. I assure you, dear reader, that is not the case. As an engineer, I am just very pleased with the design and construction of this Latitude E6420. My other laptop, a Toshiba Satellite C855D, is a miserable little train-wreck of a computer. It seems like such a tragedy sometimes that resources were invested into manufacturing and distributing something that was so poorly designed.
