This is very sad for Debian and for Linux.
The Register mentioned that Ian was arrested by the SF Police on Saturday night at Steiner and Union streets. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/12...ebian_founder/ Union street contains many upscale bars and there are usually lots of women at these bars on Saturday night. I have to wonder if alcohol was a factor in his death.

Bizarre is putting it kindly. Too many people arrested by the San Francisco Police have died, many of them simply shot to death.
After weeks of protests and hunger strikes in San Francisco, the mayor just fired the police chief. http://www.sfexaminer.com/mayor-lee-...f-suhr-resign/ ---------------------- Upate: 2016-05-21 05:00 UTC The Mayor has appointed a new police chief who promises reforms and body cameras. http://www.sfexaminer.com/new-sfpd-c...-body-cameras/

I've never used Debian and didn't even know Ian Murdock. But it's always sad when someone dies. Especially when the death is as tragic as that last report suggests. Rest in peace.

Besides the hanging, the coroners report also mentioned "Multiple blunt force trauma injuries" and that he was an alcoholic.
San Francisco needs to provide better treatment for people with addictions and other psychological issues. Sending these people to jail is not helpful.
