"startx" invokes twm if nothing else is installed and put into .xinitrc (or equivalent). It looks miserable, but it is usable and enough to tell if things are working properly.

Does it work if you use the "VESA" driver? I don't know ATi cards, but vesa should work. And what does the xorg log say?

If you use the xorg meta package, you will have the 'twm' installed by default.

by default , when you install x11/xorg you get twm window manager....

have you installed ati (x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati) driver?
(when xorg configuration popped out, you had to check the drivers you need)

in your xorg.conf
try using vga and vesa, see if that works....

try installing radeonhd (x11-drivers/xf86-video-radeonhd)

Okay it works with the vesa driver. But is very basic. Anyone else have trouble with the ati drivers, namely "ati", "radeon" and "radeonhd". If so which driver would be best for my graphics card.

What command can evoke a test to see if the drivers above have been installed and enabled for X. Even though I was sure I checked them.

You still haven't posted any Xorg logs, rather important... we're flying blind here tamtam.

Sorry BSDfan666, but the difficulty is that I am at the moment stuck in the console, or now twm. Apart from Xorg.0.log, which other logs would give an idea what is happening here. Going to go with vesa at the moment, install gnome and such. I would like to know what others who had a problem with the drivers above have over come it.

what's the problem of posting log?
it's Xorg.0.log in /var/log

just run X with ati driver save log
switch to vga/vesa, whichever works open it, copy/paste and that;s it

First: Xorg on FreeBSD is same one on linux, so ....
Second: if Slackware is using radeon driver and it is working than you should use same driver on FreeBSD.
Third: make sure that you use same or newer Xorg version and radeon driver version on FreeBSD as you use on Slackware.

$ pkg_info -x xf86-video-radeonhd

will query /var/db/{pkg,ports} for any installed package matching the expression 'xf86-video-radeonhd', drivers are named xf86-video-foo where foo is what you place in xorg.conf (e.g. ati, radeon, radeonhd).

@killasmurf86 I disagree, twm is usable, it's just (imho) annoying to use it.

usable if one obtains a huge-ish twmrc from the web somewhere.

though one might instead search out huge-ish fvwmrc's or the like
instead.

If you'd be more comfortable posting it from another workstation, copy the log to a usb drive and then post it from the box you're working on.

(Alternatively, # pkg_add -r firefox and then post it from within twm.)
