Microsoft announced 1.0 (first stable) version of .NET Core and ASP.NET Core.

Some people complain about build process, but I think that anyway it is great that dotnet is being open sourced.

Interesting they would do this. I can't help but wonder if it is financially motivated in some way. I do know I would not pollute my system with microsoft products because they offer nothing to me I can't get with native freebsd tools.

.NET Core is usually used as framework for backend of webapps (backend is server-side) and competes with Java's frameworks like Spring.
Gnu/Linux and FreeBSD are operating systems of choice for servers, so it is understandable why they are bringing .NET Core for Gnu/Linux and let community do the work to bring it to FreeBSD.
