Quote:
With this commit, the default compiler for (-current base system on the) amd64 and i386 platforms has been changed to clang(1):
CVSROOT: /cvs
Module name: src
Changes by: robert@cvs.openbsd.org 2017/07/26 13:44:42

Modified files:
share/mk : bsd.own.mk

Log message:
switch the default compiler on amd64 and i386 to clang,
but keep gcc4 in the build for these as well

This opens the door for the newer AMD/Radeon drivers.

But we don't know whether this way is going to be used. AMD driver is the biggest GPU driver and needs to be updated in kernel and added in userspace Mesa.
Moderately-new Intel GPUs are trouble-free choice for OpenBSD desktop/laptop, at least for now.
I think newer compiler primary benefit is enablement for porting OpenBSD to newer CPU architectures such as ARMv8.

This transition is part of an ongoing effort to deploy clang as the base OS compiler, on all appropriate architectures. License restrictions prevent newer versions of gcc from being deployed in the base OS.

The change also impacts package building and package deployment. Any -current users should see the July 29 update to the Following -current FAQ. I expect similar guidance will be included in the 6.2 Upgrade Guide.

It's sad, but there are no plans to add new radeon drivers, so radeon support won't change at all https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-misc&m=150522983810160&w=2
So currently my AMD PC is a very fast and very useless APU
But on other hand they've improved support for my intel laptop
