Default NetBSD 8.0_RC2 binaries available

This doesn't seem to have had a formal announcement yet, but while poking around I noticed they are here (dated June 25).

The amd64 image size has more than doubled since RC1:

NetBSD-8.0_RC1-amd64-install.img.gz 19-Apr-2018 18:59 444329kB
to
NetBSD-8.0_RC2-amd64-install.img.gz 25-Jun-2018 15:02 1001865kB

I'm gonna avoid the B***t word for now but nothing jumped out at me in the changelog to account for all the code.

On the i386 side there's a similar growth of the install.img.gz, but the growth in the .iso is not nearly as much. I haven't investigated why. On the bright side, I was also looking at the PATCHed RC1's at nyftp.netbsd.org. In that case the size from the i386 latest PATCH .iso actually went down notably in going to RC2.

I'd been playing around with RC1 (original from April) this week. I think I'll get the RC2 install kernel and sets and try upgrading it, that will be nicely smaller than the .iso (by omitting debug.tgz).

The debug/xdebug sets are large and account from most of the increase:

It's curious that RC2 announcement never made it to the home page, although RC1 did.

Now, checking the server it looks like 8.0 RELEASE is there (unless of course I'm mis-reading things).

After downloading the amd64 NetBSD 8.0 iso, it would not fit on my re-writable cdrom using cdrecord.

Track 01: 702 of 716 MB written (fifo 100%) [buf 100%] 4.1x.cdrecord: Input/output error...

Ouch, that's bad luck about the size. Hopefully you can find a work-around.

There is a simple work-around. My CDROM drives are not ancient, they also read DVDs.

A DVD was written instead of a CDROM.

I'm glad a simple solution was available.

The 8.0 rollout seems to be somewhat disorganized. NetBSD's policy is to support the last 2 releases yet 2018Q2 builds started with and continued with 6.x up until July 17.
http://mail-index.netbsd.org/pkgsrc-...msg016209.html.

Not only were resources wasted, but the entire pkgsrc code base is likely littered with patches and other mitigations for 6.x builds.

It looks like the new NetBSD/amd64 8.0 ISOs are only about 220 MB now. I would imagine that if one of their images didn't fit on a standard CD then it's a bug.

Can I ask, where are you seeing that ISO? I still see 733236kB for NetBSD-8.0-amd64.iso. While I haven't downloaded it I think it probably contains the debug.tgz set, which is 331 MB, and xdebug.tgz at 68 MB. That brings it down to roughly 316 MB without debugs. 220 seems very small?

I was looking at the boot-only (net install) ISOs: https://cdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/Ne...llation/cdrom/

Ahh, thanks for clarifying. While I haven't used that method before, it could be useful depending on the circumstances, so good to know about.

It still might be worthwhile to ask if the intent is for the full ISO to be larger than a CD-ROM.
