Default portmaster question

i installed FreeBSD and now i'm going through the manual. i pkg_added portsnap, and updated ports with no problem. next, i 'cd /usr/ports/ports-mgmt/portmaster' as root, and then 'make install clean' with no problems. at this point 'man portmaster' pulls up the man page, but when i try 'portmaster -L' it says command not found, and port<tab> completes to portsnap. what have i done wrong?
