Default how to prepare a bootable usb image

It may be simple but I've never done it before, so it would be easier to do it from windows.
I am on linux : how do I prepare my USB stick with a bootable installation image ?
I can't find a simple answer for a USB stick.
Thanks.

Why is it easier with Windows? Which Linux distribution are you using? I would be surprised if their documentation, specifically installation instructions, does not have instructions.
