Question FreeBSD 7.1 Ati Xpress 200M Xorg 7.4 problem

Hi all,
Yesterday I installed FreeBSD 7.1 i386 with no problem. I installed just the base, sources and docs.
Next:
Code:
#portsnap fetch extract
And afther I rebuilded world and the kernel using this make.conf
Code:
CPUTYPE=athlon64
CFLAGS= -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe
COPTFLAGS= -O
INSTALL=install -C
using the handbook way.
In the kernel I commented the drivers for the components that I don't have and added
Code:
options VESA
options SC_PIXEL_MODE
For now no problems.
I installed Xorg:
Code:
#cd /usr/ports/x11/xorg
#make configure install clean
and still no errors.

When I did a
#startx
I see what I am supposed to see ( the curosr and those windows etc ) but it freezes. Even with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace is still frozen. Afther using Ctrl+Alt+Backspace I switched to Atl+F2 and then back to Alt+F1. The output is identic with xorg.0.log but it remains frozen, and not switching back to the console.

The xorg.conf is ok. The xorg.0.log gave me some error regarding drm so I included the drm module in xorg.conf but it still freezes. ( afther kldloading it of course )

The machine is a Dell Inspiron 1501n with AMD Turion TL-50.

Do you guys know what the problem can be ?

PS: I will post later the log files and the xorg.conf. But until that please give me your opinion.

Radu

I've used an Ati Xpress 200M for years, and it works perfectly on my machine under FreeBSD 6.x through 7.0-Release with X.Org 6.x and 7.x using Generic kernels. Currently using a build of RELENG_7 shortly after 7.1-Release happened, with my custom kernel and X.Org 7.3 upgraded to 7.4: no problems what so ever. (pre or post xorg upgrade).

It works like a charm, unless you ask for DRI and stuff.

P.S. DO NOT **** WITH CXXFLAGS UNLESS YOU SERIOUSLY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING^1024 !!!

I've used FreeBSD 7 on an Xpress 200M for a while, even with DRI, and didn't have any problems, though this was a while back, even before 7.0-RELEASE. We'd really need to see the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to make any sort of educated guess as to what's going on.

Adam

EDIT: Also, 'drm' is not an Xorg module. 'dri' is, however.

I have used X200M on 6.x an it worked perfect.

CXXFLAGS is another mistake, i meant CFLAGS but I was probablly thinking at somethign else. I will corect it.

Here is /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The difference between CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS, the former is for C compilation, the latter is for C++ compliation - and nether should be dicked with when compiling stuff in /usr/src/.

I know the difference between them ( I installed and rebuilded 6.2 and 6.3 and edited make.conf ), but I wrote CXX eventhough I was thinking at C.
And the kernel was buid with -O, which it means no optimization so I don't think this wil be a problem.
I will try te reinstall Xorg and be verry carefull when configuring it to see what happens.

Don't you have any opinion ?

I saw the error regarding drm and I recompiled the GENRIC kernel were I added only "options VESA" and configured the Xorg to use the VESA driver. THe same thing happens ( freezing ) except that when I do Alt+F2 Alt+F1 there is no output like before ( the Xorg.0.log whithout the markers and their content ).

there are several recent long threads on fixing freezes in the
lastest Xorg. You may have to edit your xorg.conf with
several of those fixes. (if that is the problem)

From your Xorg.0.log, it doesn't seem you have an xorg.conf file. Since you are having trouble, it would probably be a good idea to have one instead of using the autoconfigure. Your log is also saying that your mouse and keyboard are not detected, so that is why it seems like it is "freezing". You will probably have better luck if you rebuild xorg-server without HAL support and setup your devices in xorg.conf.

add

Option "AllowEmptyInput" "off"

to your ServerFlags Section in
your xorg.conf, and everthing
should work fine again..

-O is equal to -O1 which indicates 1st level of optimizaitons, 2nd level with -O2 and 3rd with -O3.

Check details here in the man:
http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4....timize-Options

You need to have
Option "AllowEmptyInput" "off"
in your xorg.conf

If that still doesnt work and you are using hal you will need to have
enable_hald="YES"
enable_dbus="YES"
in your rc.conf
