Default Ian Murdock, father of Debian, dead at 42

From http://arstechnica.com/information-t...an-dead-at-42/

Quote:
Ian Murdock, founder of the Debian GNU/Linux distribution project, has died at the age of 42. His death, announced in a blog post by Docker CEO Ben Golub, came after an apparent encounter with police and a statement posted on Murdock's Twitter feed that he was going to commit suicide, though no cause of his death has been given.

This is very sad for Debian and for Linux.

The Register mentioned that Ian was arrested by the SF Police on Saturday night at Steiner and Union streets.

Union street contains many upscale bars and there are usually lots of women at these bars on Saturday night. I have to wonder if alcohol was a factor in his death.

Without any details, it is too early to speculate about the cause. It could be any of a number of things. Although I am surprised he was only 42. I thought he was a little older.

The UK Guardian published a tribute by Doc Searls.

There are still no details about his death.

I've never used Debian and didn't even know Ian Murdock. But it's always sad when someone dies. Especially when the death is as tragic as that last report suggests. Rest in peace.

Bizarre is putting it kindly. Too many people arrested by the San Francisco Police have died, many of them simply shot to death.

After weeks of protests and hunger strikes in San Francisco, the mayor just fired the police chief.

The Mayor has appointed a new police chief who promises reforms and body cameras.

Besides the hanging, the coroners report also mentioned "Multiple blunt force trauma injuries" and that he was an alcoholic.

San Francisco needs to provide better treatment for people with addictions and other psychological issues. Sending these people to jail is not helpful.
