Question Wifi trouble - worked during install, never again

I'm having some trouble getting wireless working on 4.6. I'm using a D-Link DWA-130 device (Ralink RT2870) which is listed as supported. When I do "ifconfig run0 scan" it shows my network and all others in the area without trouble. But when I try to connect:

Quote:
ifconfig run0 nwid MYNETWORK nwkey 0xMYKEYTRIPLECHECKED
dhclient run0
DHCPDISCOVER on run0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 5
DHCPDISCOVER on run0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 14
...
No DHCPOFFERS received.
Doing exactly this worked fine while installing and I was able to connect, but it ceases to work after install. I can only scan and never connect.

Hi there RadioKJ, it would be to your benefit to post the results of your dmesg and ifconfig -a command, we on the other end of your post cannot tell as much.

I really don't know a whole lot about wireless configuration, but it may be a good idea to try specifying the channel implicitly.. and you can try unplugging it and trying again if that fails.

$ sudo ifconfig run0 chan ? nwid MYNETWORK nwkey 0xMYKEYTRIPLECHECKED

Also, I notice that pciide(4) fails to establish a DMA mode for devices attached to your SATA controller.. you should check your BIOS and see if you're able to configure the device in AHCI mode, otherwise you'll need to manually patch the ahci(4) driver to attach (..PIO mode is slow, and uses a lot of CPU time).

Code:
pciide0 at pci0 dev 17 function 0 "ATI SBx00 SATA" rev 0x00: DMA (unsupported), channel 0 configured to native-PCI, channel 1 configured to native-PCI
pciide0: using apic 2 int 22 (irq 10) for native-PCI interrupt
wd0 at pciide0 channel 0 drive 0: <WDC WD3200AAJS-22B4A0>
wd0: 16-sector PIO, LBA48, 305245MB, 625142448 sectors
atapiscsi0 at pciide0 channel 1 drive 0
scsibus0 at atapiscsi0: 2 targets
cd0 at scsibus0 targ 0 lun 0: <HL-DT-ST, DVDRAM GH15F, EG00> ATAPI 5/cdrom removable
If you can toggle this in your BIOS, you will need to change your /etc/fstab file to reflect this, it will be an sd(4) device instead of wd(4).

Also, your TV/MPEG capture card is not supported by OpenBSD.

Good luck, please consider editing at least your ifconfig output so that it's easier to distinguish between interfaces.

Manually choosing the channel led to no difference. It automatically found the right one anyway.

I don't particularly care about the TV card. I'm just too lazy to remove it from the computer.

Apparently new users can't edit posts. If it's helpful, here's a repost:

Here is the output of my hostname.iwn0 file (yours would be hostname.run0)

dhcp nwid WiFiNet wpa wpapsk $(wpa-psk WiFiNet wifipassword)

This is my currently working config, the WiFiNet is altered and wifipassword is not my password, i do NOT use 0x in front of it for the hostname file, give this a try and feel free to post back.

Unfortunately I'm stuck using WEP on my router due to a couple devices (soon to be replaced) that don't support WPA. At any rate, putting everything into the hostname.run0 file hasn't changed the result.

Can you post the RAMDISK kernel dmesg? while diagnosing issues like this is often futile.. perhaps we'll get lucky.

You could always try installing a snapshot, maybe you're running into something that was fixed after the release.

EXAMPLES
The following hostname.if(5) example configures iwn0 to join whatever
network is available on boot, using WEP key ``0x1deadbeef1'', channel 11,
obtaining an IP address using DHCP:

dhcp NONE NONE NONE nwkey 0x1deadbeef1 chan 11
This is the syntax for WEP (within a hostname file), i sent you syntax concerning WPA-PSK, edit accordingly, i was unaware (lack of details) what you were using WEP not WPA.

Yucky for that, but could you please perhaps post some syntax (and outcome)? or the error messages themselves? "hasn't changed the result" is hard to diagnose from here. I am aware you can not connect and just looking for a bit more detail that may help.

Did you restart networking after you tried using a hostname file? perhaps a reboot to reveal any other types of errors at startup? Also posting the RAMDISK kernel dmesg as BSDFan666 suggest maybe helpful, you did state that it worked from the installer and not after, that is all we know ...

Futile is correct, the word "lucky" stems (etymologically) from Lucifer, let us use the word fortunate instead? perhaps avoiding the ups and downs and uncertainties of "luck" or "lady luck" hehehe, geez me ...

Damnedest thing happened: it now works.

I loaded the ramdisk kernel as suggested and got the dmesg:

While I was there I tried setting up the network just as I've been doing and it connected fine; the same as it did during install. Then when I rebooted normally it again connected properly (automatically thanks to hostname.run0). Before this I would continue to get the messages from my first post. It's now connecting perfectly after repeated reboots.

In case it helps figure out what happened, here's the new dmesg after rebooting with wifi working:

The fact that your device sporadically started working after booting the RAMDISK image seems to point out some sort of random initialization problem.. could even be some sort of quirk with your USB controller.

Now that you have that sorted, perhaps you can look into the other issues I pointed out regarding your SATA controller.

Thanks. That'll be another time though. Thus far it hasn't caused any problems and I should've been asleep a long time ago for work tomorrow.

Hehehehe, for the record i am not very "religous" either, i believe in myself before anything else, i like how you started the sentance with "Fortunately".

Glad to see that a mystery reboot (or boot up from RAMDISK kernel) cured? your WiFi griefs, sleep is a good thing yes almost time for me too.

GOOD thing to look into, it will increase your disk performance noticably, do not forget to edit your /etc/fstab file to reflect, enjoy

Guess what's broken this morning?

Code:
$ sudo dhclient run0
DHCPREQUEST on run0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
DHCPREQUEST on run0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
DHCPDISCOVER on run0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 3
DHCPDISCOVER on run0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 7
DHCPDISCOVER on run0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 15
DHCPDISCOVER on run0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 11
DHCPDISCOVER on run0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 15
DHCPDISCOVER on run0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 10
No DHCPOFFERS received.
Trying recorded lease 192.168.1.109
No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.
I assumed maybe it would only work if the router had already given it the lease, but now it won't even work when I boot to ramdisk. I get the same messages (sans "trying recorded lease"). Trying a second time while in ramdisk gives me the message "Can't find free bpf: No such file or directory".

The same device has no problems under Windows or Linux (ndiswrapper). Perhaps I should replace my router. I intended to do so anyway, but not for a few months. This one doesn't support manually assigning an IP to a MAC address or I'd try that.

Perhaps it maybe better to use sh /etc/netstart, i have noticed that dhclient does this to me as well sometimes, ensure your hostname.xxx file is correct (for WEP that is) and restart your networking with the netstart command, sh /etc/netstart run0 ( i prefer sh /etc/netstart because sometime a route or some DNS may poop without a full network restart).

You did state that you did once again boot from RAMDISK kernel and it did not work this morning? i have had to recreate the whole hostname file sometimes because of a space? or some wierd character that DID NOT WORK, that said it almost sounds like your having hardware problems.

If you get a chance hook up to somebody else's router (a friend not a random) and see if you get the same results.

I have noticed similiar behavior with my RAlink USB (rum driver) device on 4.6 i386. If I plugin the device after power up and then run dhclient from the command line I will not get a lease.

I get a lease 80-90% of the time if I power up with the usb device plugged in.

Well thanks anyway for trying everyone, but I've decided to just put this thing back into the closet. A wired network is too inconvenient at the moment and I'm really only using this thing to learn about BSD. I may have another go at it with an old laptop I dug up.

.

I've had better results for wireless network devices if I bypass the network setup during installation and set it up the old way. For you all you really need to do is to make the /etc/hostname.run0 file according to the directions in 'man run'.

I think the run0 devices are also fairly new. I can vouch for most ral0, ath0 and rum0 devices. Prism 2.5/3.0 usb devices are buggy. Do you have an alternative wireless device?
