Default linear framebuffer access unavailable .. Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault)

Hi everybody!

I upgraded OpenBSD-5.1 from stable to current .. after sysmerging I was asked what to do .. I chose m (merge) and i (install) instead of default option (leaving files until later for manual editing)

After reboot I couldn't start X :

X cannot start because the i386 X aperture is set to 0 (disabled).
Code:
70.025] (WW) checkDevMem: failed to open /dev/xf86 and /dev/mem
(Operation not permitted)
Check that you have set 'machdep.allowaperture=1'
in /etc/sysctl.conf and reboot your machine
refer to xf86(4) for details
Apparently, your improper use of sysmerge(8) overlayed your customizations. This particular customization was done during installation, when you told the installation script you planned to use X.

As best practice, you should have backed up /etc before running sysmerge. If you did not, you may still find the original, unchanged files in a backup directory under the sysmerge working directory in the /var/tmp tree. See the sysmerge(8) man page for further information.

Thank you @jgimmi !
Unfortunately I forgot to backup /etc on this disk. The /etc backup located in /var/tmp/sysmere*****/ didn't help and it is far smaller in size than the original /etc.
Can you think of a way out ? (I have a similar disk for the same machine)
Sorry for being such a nuisance again.

To get X working again, all you need is this option in /etc/sysctl.conf:

Code:
machdep.allowaperture=1
If you made any other changes to that file, hopefully you remember what they were :-)

And this is a good example of why we keep recommending backups to you. The most you have ever stated in response is that you might consider it one day in the future.

The backup directory should contain backups of the files that were altered. Look for a sysctl.conf file. If it isn't there, you can edit /etc/sysctl.conf and set the aperture to 2, required for X on i386.

Your incorrect sysctl.conf is only one possible error of many.
You should sort through /etc by date of last update (use ls(1), of course) and manually check any updated files, editing as applicable.

Adam, this is not the case for i386, where the xf86(4) aperture driver control must be set to 2. See FAQ 11.2.6 and its README.i386 link.

Was the system rebooted with aperture set to 2 before you attempted to start X?

If the answer is no, that was your problem.

If you are sure you had your /etc files configured correctly, consider a newer snapshot. At this moment, there is a June 18 snapshot that included a Xenocara fileset updates.

To be clear, @daemonfowl, if you edited the file and set the sysctl from 1 to 2, then started X without rebooting, X would not function.

  • Editing /etc/sysctl.conf does not change any active settings, only the contents of the file.
  • That file is only read by rc(8) at boot time.
  • While many sysctl settings may be set at any time via the sysctl(8) command, the aperture sysctl can only be set when the securelevel is set at 0 or below ... which means, for normal systems, only during boot.
