It shouldn't be surprising. Given that whoever is left assessing the current train wreck has been so removed from the day-to-day operation, they are probably needing time to determine how "they" want to respond to the overall mess. Secondly, eradicating the spam will take a concerted effort to complete.

Given that the final "In memorium" post is once again prominently exposed (as if any message could be exposed at BSDForums...), it's probably a good guess that the Admin there now knows that he has an abandoned site.

I know there's probably some level of resentment over things that have happened in the past (which is only natural), but I'm inclined to say "who cares". That other forum was fun and informative - while it lasted.

I am very pleased with how quickly and effectively daemonforums.org was formed in the wake of our old habitat.

It's been stated that the acrimony should be kept down... and I while I agree with taking the high road, it must be stated that it's difficult to show the admin any love or empathy at this point. There was a lot of effort placed into creating a community on that site, and it never got the attention or respect it deserved from the site owner.

I guess I don't need to rehash things for most of you guys... you were, after all, that community I speak of. But I will say that the best thing that guy could do is take the site down and call it quits. Its obvious that he can't properly maintain it, he lost the core of the community that could've maintained it, and by keeping it up only serves to confuse the situation. I hate to think that newbies will find that forum, post there, experience the malaise that is that site, and then conclude to some degree that it is representative of the BSD community.

Long live daemonforums!

> Long live daemonforums!

Amen !

I think this is the only time I've seen something like this happen, but hey... At least on daemonforums it shouldn't happen again as long as there is a community willing to take care of business :-)

Never cared much for BSDForums but I've always respected it as a great resource and networked 'watering hole' so to speak.

Default Second Thoughts on Old Forum?

hi

It sounds like many here are having second thoughts
on going back to the old forum as something may have been finally done about the spam posting.

After cleaning up the spam i guess there needs to be
ip address or member name block or removal there as well of the person that did all that damage.

Almost like renting an apartment jeffery dahmer once lived at.

The resident is gone but the evil still lurks among it all.

i do notice alot less members here then before as well
even fmj i have not seen in some time since all this has happened.

I go by DrJ here, as I do on most of the other boards. I tried to do so on the old board as well, but the admin screwed it up.

Default hi

Oh i see

Yes i think i got really upset there myself
and told someone some bad things maybe because i was so comfortable there,
and then all of a sudden that comfort was no longer there,

After hearing about what was going on there i also made the move to here.

i missed seeing my old questions when i needed to look back on some notes as well.
and do not know if they still have them there or not.

But the next day i get a reply from an important question i asked
and when i go to the page it was nothing but an advertisement link.

And thats when i just lost it from that day on because you can ask anyone if
i ever acted inapropriate at any time before in that forum till that day.

i think after yelling and screaming there i changed my password and email
so i can forget how to log in i was that upset.

So even if they do reopen and you all move back i would be locked out.

@heatherval, banning the IP of a single spambot isn't a solution... it's probably not a person, just multiple automated bots/scripts that target exploits in the forum software.

I doubt anyone here will take the journey back to bsdforums, we're all quite aware of how the admin abandoned the community, seems likely he would do it again.

What should be done is the forum should be taken down.. archived perhaps.. and the admin should recommend daemonforums.

Smile hi

i know but i just see people talking like this man drj here
so i assumed people were going back.i did not know.

Also i am trying to liven this place up a bit hopefully the right way this time.

By asking questions and making this place look unlike a ghost town lol.

i remember a few years ago i had a forum running and
a few people FreeBSD forum helped me by adding questions and answers to the forum.

Something happened there similar to what happen in the other place we all left but nothing as bad as that.

That's too cryptic for me. I was one of the first to post over here, and have no intention to return to the "other site." The people I know are here now.

I don't think anyone is really thinking of going back to the old forum. Some of us, from time to time, go there to tell new posters that the forums have been abandoned, and they should come here.

It's sad leaving anything, but it happens. One tries to take the good memories from it, learn from the bad ones, and let them go.

Since none of us really know what is going on over there, it's almost silly to speculate. There are always more important things to worry about, but anyway, I'd say most, if not all of us, are here now.

heatherval, I think you need to look around a little more. Not only are there lots of posts every day but most, if not all, of the same names from the other board. I agree with scottro that I have no need to go back to the other board except to search for possible past solutions. But this too shall pass in time.

@heatherval, Threads: 662, Posts: 4,917, Members: 587, Active Members: 561

I was from bsdforums, there is a huge thread over there with everyone complaining about the no-show admin.. most of us came here, at least *all* of the big names from there.

Some may have changed their display name, I, have not... but I didn't bring over the demon avatar.

hi

Yes i kind of miss my little tweety pie avatar
but i did not want to directly link it from that site.

i still personally trust a penguin or a blowfish over a devil anytime.

It's a daemon, not a devil.
I would choose a lean mean daemon over a obese and stoned penguin anytime...

Also, if you use the "upload from URL" feature the avatar isn't linked to the URL, it is downloaded and hosted by us.
