Smile Tutorial for installing Gnome on OpenBSD 4.7 and 4.8

Hello,

I wrote a little tutorial about installing Gnome 2.28.2 on a fresh default installation of OpenBSD 4.7. I thought it may help some people, so I share it here. I know that there are various HOWTOs on the web already, but I failed to find a complete and fully working one. So here is my contribution. It is of course not a perfect tutorial as I am not an expert in BSD operating systems, so your comments, corrections and suggestions are very welcome.

Here it is :

http://www.gabsoftware.com/tips/inst...n-openbsd-4-7/

Update: This tutorial has been updated for OpenBSD 4.8 + Gnome 2.30.2 and several corrections and additions have been made to it. You can read it at:
http://www.gabsoftware.com/tips/tuto...n-openbsd-4-8/.

Thank you for your positive feedback!

Regards.

Very useful, I used it myself to install Gnome, no problems with any of it although I used the supplied 'vi' editor rather than installing nano. Any thoughts on what packages to install to get the rest of the usual Gnome experience installed (The System -> Administration and the Applications -> Accessories and System Tools menus are particularly sparse!)

I'm glad this helped you
I don't know how to install the other Gnome menus, I don't even know if it is possible, but if it is, I would also appreciate if someone could tell which package to install.

Nice job on the GNOME tutorial. In the fairly recent past I've installed and run GNOME in both OpenBSD (4.7) and FreeBSD (7.3 and 8.0).

The environment is quite fast in both operating systems, although as you can see from the tutorial there are a few manual-configuration steps you must take before everything is working properly.

I spent quite a bit of time running OpenBSD with the stock Fvwm2 window manager and Xfce, both of which I recommend. But if you find yourself more productive in GNOME, the BSDs are a good place to run it. Both OpenBSD and FreeBSD support GNOME very well (i.e. the developers who create the ports/packages definitely eat their own dog food and want this stuff to work).
