Default How to make DesktopBSD detect re0?

Hi,
I need to find out how to make DesktopBSD use the 're0' driver.

The thing is that I'm in love with FreeBSD, but can't get my head around making X work ... so I'm experimenting with PC-BSD and DesktopBSD (and prefer the latter).

My pc is based on a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R motherboard which sports dual Realtek 8111C chips for ethernet. What's odd is that PC-BSD recognizes these, but DesktopBSD does not. I haven't yet found out whether FreeBSD does or not (I know: poor research; I beg your pardon).

Searching for DesktopBSD and Realtek and that Gigabyte board returns no relevant results. Help! I need a bit of hand-holding; I need to find out how to make DesktopBSD use the 're0' driver, but I don't know whether it's included in a standard install but just isn't loaded, or else where and how to get it -- especially without, you know, a network connection.

Edit: Forgot to mention: DesktopBSD is the v1.6 DVD version pulled from their site last week.

The re driver has been around since FreeBSD 5.1 according to its manual page, which also states how to set it up ;-)

So it should be included unless DesktopBSD does strange things with their LKMs. Modern FreeBSD at least, has it built into the kernel (PC-BSD uses a custom kernel conf). If DesktopBSD doesn't seem to have it:

Code:
$ kldstat -v | grep if_re
then edit /boot/loader.conf to load it at boot, and manually load the LKM:

Code:
# echo 'if_re_load="YES"' >> /boot/loader.conf
# kldload if_re

I don't use DesktopBSD, so I can't say anything or know much about its standard setup.

Thanks for the reply! I don't expect you to be an expert on DesktopBSD, but I do expect DesktopBSD to be not totally unlike FreeBSD. I've looked into your hints; here's the outcome copied :
Code:
klaymen# kldstat -v | grep if_re
klaymen# kldstat -v | grep if_
                126 pci/if_ath
                127 cardbus/if_ath
                175 pci/if_ixgb
                341 if_faith
                342 if_gif
                344 if_ppp
                345 if_sl
                346 if_tun
 5 1 0xc0c2a000 9828 if_ipw.ko
 6 1 0xc0c34000 e6e4 if_iwi.ko
klaymen# kldload if_re
klaymen# echo 'if_re_load="YES"' >> /boot/loader.conf
kldload: can't load if_re: File exists
So I don't really know if the "File exists" was to be expected, but my feeling is, probably not. I'm trying to get a comparison of the dmesg outputs, but it's kinda tricky to copy from a non-networked pc.

Edit: Here are the dmesg's (I'm so glad these code boxes are made scrollable):

DesktopBSD is just FreeBSD with a bunch of custom ports pre-installed. You can "install" DesktopBSD via the ports tree on a regular FreeBSD install.

PC-BSD is just FreeBSD with a GUI pre-configured, and a custom application installer that uses binary packages (.pbi) instead of the ports tree. They also customise the base install a bit, but it's still FreeBSD.

However, which version of FreeBSD is installed by DesktopBSD and PC-BSD is different. And which version of FreeBSD includes support for your specific Realtek chipset is the important question.

What's the output of uname -a on your system?

You need to be running FreeBSD 7.1 to have support for that chipset.

This is the part I was not aware of. DesktopBSD is lagging behind PC-BSD in terms of which FreeBSD it's based on, so that's most likely the explanation. Thanks! DesktopBSD v1.6 is based on FreeBSD v6.3-RC2, so this means that I can kiss DBSD goodbye for the time being. At least it's good to know why.

@klaymendk, you're using an old version of DesktopBSD. You can get 7.1 via snapshots.

http://desktopbsd.net/index.php?id=43&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=40&tx_ttnews[backPid]=55&cHash=33d2b0cec3

Snapshots: ftp://ftp.desktopbsd.net/pub/DesktopBSD/Snapshots/

Usually they a rather stable, apart from some possible minor quirks in the tools or config.

Six weeks ago I tested a FreeBSD 7.1 BETA snapshot, it detected my 're0' NIC but it didn't work.

Only when I used tcpdump on 're0' it started to work. On the FreeBSD mailing lists there are more reports about problems with the 're' driver.

Okay thanks for the info. I'm downloading the first 2009 snapshot and will try to install it this evening.

I'm not glad to hear of the re0 support problems; I spent a good deal of time trying to select components that would work with FreeBSD. Turns out I did a less than perfect job.

Question Well riddle me this!

My, how interesting! I've just downloaded, burnt, and installed the first 2009 snapshot ("uname -a" reports "FreeBSD desktopbsd 7.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE #22: Sun Jan 4 03:52:16 UTC 2009"). At the first boot, I checked to see if the network card was there, and it wasn't. I've got both IP and Ethernet over Firewire as well as a PLIP network interface, but ... no Realtek or 're0' device.
Curiously, "dmesg" does detect this:
Code:
re0: <RealTek 8168/8168B/8168C/8168CP/8168D/8111B/8111C/8111CP PCIe Gigabit Ethernet> port 0xc000-0xc0ff mem 0xeb010000-0xeb010fff,0xeb000000-0xeb00ffff irq 16 at device 0.0 on pci4
re0: Chip rev. 0x3c000000
re0: MAC rev. 0x00400000
re0: PHY write failed
re0: PHY write failed
re0: MII without any phy!
device_attach: re0 attach returned 6
BUT what's interesting is that I write this post from the live cd system running off that same installation DVD -- it may not be able to install it, but it sure does have what's required!
Even now, where it's actually working, "kldstat -v | grep if_re" does not report any hits, and "loader.conf" actually lists "if_re_load="NO"".
Also, "dmesg" identifies it as:
Code:
re0: <RealTek 8168/8168B/8168C/8168CP/8168D/8111B/8111C/8111CP PCIe Gigabit Ethernet> port 0xc000-0xc0ff mem 0xeb010000-0xeb010fff,0xeb000000-0xeb00ffff irq 16 at device 0.0 on pci4
re0: Chip rev. 0x3c000000
re0: MAC rev. 0x00400000
miibus0: <MII bus> on re0
re0: Ethernet address: 00:1f:d0:27:37:76
re0: [FILTER]
I'm sure there's a way to get this driver off of the DVD, but I'm just too much of a noob to pull that off. I will make sure there's a ticket for this in the DesktopBSD project.

... later that evening ...

I have found that [URL="http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=130011"]FreeBSD kern/130011 ticket/URL] already documents this issue. Even better, there's a proposed workaround from the maintainer which apparently works for someone. I'll try the same thing, and report back here.

Hmm, I seem to have trouble rebuilding my kernel; there were a whole lot of "undefined reference to `many different bits'" messages.

I wonder if I have all the /usr/src files? Does 434Mb in 39000 files sound about right, or short of the mark? (Yeah I know, I'm a noob... ) Of course, I can't just update (download) the /usr/src from the 'net, nor can I copy it from the install DVD which I kinda hoped. Hum. End of story, it seems.
