Comparing relational databases and non-relational ("nosql") databases directly is like comparing a car with a boat. They both do more or less the same thing (move around), but they're designed for very different environments.

It would be more accurate to say that they are designed for very different expectations.
Relational database take data integrity issues very seriously -- even in environments with high volatility. The result is that consistency & replication needs can make big iron hardware a necessity. The NoSQL databases can relax the integrity requirements making lesser hardware a possibility. |
