Default recommendations on a picture viewer

My install is this > default 4.8 install adding only mutt, links, mlpayer, and mp3blaster. I am looking for something small, possibly command driven if possible to view pictures (mostly jpegs) from my nikkon d40. I am not looking for anything gui driven. I have googled this topic and get a plethora of options but don't know what to choose and would really would like to know what you guys/girls recommend.

I'll second that, feh doesn't really have that many dependencies.. and the UI is fairly minimalist, it's a decent viewer.

The alternative is the infamous xv/XV.

It is unclear to me if the original poster was looking for a viewer or a means to interface the camera with his computer. A quick search indicates that the Nikon D40 uses the PTP protocol.

If you want to keep your system simple use the libgphoto2 (backend) and gphoto2 (Command Line front end). Other front ends are gtkam, digikam. Larger desktop environments also can show the gphoto libs in a file browser.

I use feh mostly for setting a wallpaper, but also 'do' as a image viewer, I also use gpicview from lxde and sometimes risotto from xfce.

@Shep, Not sure what you mean by interface my camera. But if you mean simply browse it contents, all I do at this point is mount it to /mnt/usb and this allows me to view the contents of the sdcard but not the indvidual jpegs. I am going to read up on feh and xv/XV as BSDfan666 and Alpaultra1 suggested.

I am really trying to keep my system as lean as possible and install as few dependencies as needed.

Assuming you already have a graphical browser installed, this is an option as well. In the input text box where one typically enters URL's, simply specify the absolute path to the filename in URI format:
Code:
file:///path_to_image(s)/filename.extension
FWIW.

Thanks again everyone. I ultimately decided on xloadimage because of its simplicity and small footprint. I am quite happy with it as well but still read the man page a couple more times to get a grasp on all the available options.
