Default New OpenBSD install on Lenovo ultrabook

Hello all,

I recently installed OpenBSD on my laptop, a Lenovo u300s "ultrabook." It's been mostly great so far. I was previously running Fedora 20 with KDE, but I decided to switch out of curiosity, as well as to escape some minor stability issues, and because I was attracted to the emphasis on security and code quality.

Had to purchase an external DVD drive to install from disc, and getting the wireless to work properly was a bit of an adventure. I actually registered on these forums to ask a question about installing wireless firmware, but solved it myself after doing more research on my own. The OpenBSD man pages are unbelievably good coming from GNU/Linux.

Anyway, thought I would say hello and introduce my system briefly. Hopefully these forums will be a great resource as I get more familiar with the *BSDs, and perhaps I will be able to answer a few questions myself.

Pavan

I do not want to be the first to welcome you, since I am a nobody here, but welcome.

There is lots of good information here, as well as some very knowledgeable people. (I wish I was one of them.)

Did the USB installer not work on your machine?

I've just installed OpenBSD 5.6 on my Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga as well.

So far, I'm cautiously optimistic - things work better out of the box than I expected. I installed KDE4 and Firefox from ports, and am now looking into getting the wireless to work.

I'm completely new to OpenBSD, but I've used FreeBSD on x86 & PowerPC a long time ago, and NetBSD on a couple of embedded devices (no X). I come from a Linux background and am trying OpenBSD because
  1. It's the only BSD to support Haswell graphics
  2. I'm upset with regressions I'm seeing in modern Linux distributions
