Can you boot into single user mode (menu option 4)? Most people don't configure the console as 'insecure', so a password is not needed there. The boot process will give you /bin/sh as the shell (just press enter when prompted). You can then perform a 'mount -a' to mount the disks, and use 'passwd' to set a new password.
