[Unofficial] daemonforums XMPP/Jabber conference room
So lately I've been thinking of ways we can make the forum a bit more, live-action..
Fortunately I remembered the Jabber foundation hosts a public conference server (XMPP MUC XEP). If you feel like chatting about all things BSD, here are the details: Server: conference.jabber.org Room: daemonforums Most XMPP/Jabber clients support this, my personal recommendation is Pidgin.. I'll see how it goes.. if nobody joins, no big loss.. |

This might not have been well thought out on my part, the official MUC server offered by jabber.org is insanely slow.. using it for any purpose besides testing is silly.
The room is still up, but I would be very interested in a server recommendation.. perhaps one that's less abused? Still, overall I recommend this protocol vs the traditional "IRC" approach.. it's a security nightmare, a MUC room can be configured to hide revealing information about the users joining, which might be beneficial. Thanks. |

Right, well I closed the jabber.org room... perhaps it was a good idea, at a bad time.. oh well.

Well, short of someone wanting to host a server... My only advice would be to start here and begin searching, if you haven't already.

Hello again,
So I found a server that appears to allow public rooms, if you want to join and chat.. here are the details. Room: daemonforums Server: conference.im.flosoft.biz This time, the server appears fast.. and.. fairly reliable. |
|
|||
Just a small update, I had the room configure incorrectly.. so.. it may have been causing problems for anyone who attempted to join.
Most Jabber/XMPP clients support this, including Pidgin.. and the room should be accessible from a Google Talk account, but perhaps not from their official client. Hope to see some people there. |

As stated above, it's a security nightmare.. IRC discloses potentially revealing information about guests, but in a XMPP conference.. your identity is safe by default.
What does this mean? nobody except moderators can see your full jabber ID, private messaging is even restricted.. of coarse, that may or may not be handy. I just like the Jabber/XMPP protocol.. and I really like advocating it, far too many bad IRC experiences. |

I may have overstated the problem, I often exaggerate.. hope to see you there.

I've used IRC for several years without any serious issues, but I also don't have much to hide ^_^. (I also prefer it for Group Chats)
if anyone actually hangs out in the room you've setup, I'll fire up one of my accounts and select a suitable XMPP client. XMPP/Jabber isn't perfect, but at least is it open, unlike many popular alterntives for general instant messenging ;-).

Hey, I kept the room open for almost a week.. and.. only 2 people stopped by.
I'd like to thank TerryP for humouring me for a day, and finally.. a stranger named westsibe who joined and left within the 5 minutes I was restarting pidgin. I've learnt my lesson, people really don't like Jabber/XMPP! |

out that mcabber is the way to go for me. It took me another day to understand the configuration file. I never had the time to configure it properly. If you wanted to use IRC I would be there in no time. I actually ported SIC to OpenBSD specifically (didn't get committed yet) to be able to use IRC as I was unable to use more complicated IRC clients. |

Under X, I've generally found Psi to be a great IM client - light weight and unobtrusive. The only bad thing about Psi being, it is strictly an XMPP/Jabber client hehe ;-).
